The Laidlaw's Buick, on a wooden bridge near Goulburn, NSW. A researcher says 'This is a photo of a three-span Allan truss bridge built over the Wingecarribee River at Berrima, between Sydney and Goulburn. The bridge was opened in c.1897 and provided service until 1962, when it was replaced by the current concrete bridge. It was sometimes called the Martindale Bridge, after Captain Ben Martindale, who was Road Commissioner in NSW 1857-1861.

Charles Todd and the Overland Telegraph team

A note on the back of the photograph reads 'Members of the Overland Telegraph Party at Roper River, 1872. Left to right: J.A.G. Little, R.C. Patterson, Charles Todd and A.J. Mitchell. Todd (later Sir Charles Todd) was one of the great men of South Australian history. The telegraph lines which he built linked Adelaide with Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Darwin (and hence by cable with the rest of the world). Todd was the first man to pioneer the centre after Stuart's first crossing to Darwin. Alice Springs (on the Todd River) was named after his wife. This photograph, taken by Captain Sweet, is a brilliant example of early photography in Australia and is reproduced by courtesy of the South Australian Archives'.

The description on the reverse side, thought to have been written by Daisy Bates, reads: "The start from Eucla (Gowera in buggy, Balgundra standing) over the Great Plain in May 1914 to attend the British Association for the advancement of Science in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. Eucla is now dismantled of its telegraph office, stores etc. which have been removed to the Transcontinental Railway line and Eucla is now an abandoned area - all its native inhabitants are dead."

Photograph in postcard format of a yacht at water's edge, surrounded by a curious crowd. There are two jetties in the background, which were works jetties to support the construction of the Glenelg Breakwater from 1914 until around 1918. The closer jetty has concrete caissons on rails along its decking. The casting plant for the caissons can be seen on the right of the photograph, which was located in the 'works depot', situated in part of Wigley Reserve. A third jetty was constructed about 1916 to accommodate a locomotive and trucks for the carriage of rubble to the breakwater site, and shovelled into the concrete caissons by hand [information supplied by a researcher].
