General notes

The date of this photo is more likely to be at least 1912, or if not, as old as 1920. The Boy Scouts as an organization did not start until 1908, there is evidence at the South Australian Branch Scout Archives that scouting did not offically start by Royal Charter until 1912. Since the boys and men in the photo here have official- or at least official-looking badges and uniforms, it would stand to reason that the image must be post 1912, when the offical uniform for Australia was created. Also, the fact that cubs scouts are also in the photo, and are wearing official cub scout caps (not the rimmed scout hat) would argue to make this image is dated around 1920, when the cub troops were better organized, had official cub uniforms and a better number of leaders were available to lead cub and scout troops (after the war). [Information provided by Sherrie Gavin, [in 2008] doing a PHD on the history of scouting within Australia (1900-1920) at the University of Western Sydney].

[From another researcher]: It would appear that the photograph would be around c1916-1920 as Wolf Cubs started in 1916. Also 1st Glen Osmond Scout Troop was was first registered in 1912/13 by the South Australian Branch of the Baden-Powell Scouts. There was a rival scout organisation also operating at that time, The British Boy Scouts and can be confusing to date some photographs. The first Troop to be registered in SA (formally) was the 1st Petersburg (Peterborough) in September 1909.
