Her hair is arranged in the style worn by Queen Victoria at the time, parted down the centre and pulled back into a low chignon worn at the nape of the neck. [On back of photograph] 'Charlotte Edwin Roffe- aged 18 in 1836-37 / Photograph of drawing in crayon by the famous Sir Thomas Ewins R.A., used as the basis of Queen Victoria's portraits for the Dominions, in that and succeeding years. The Queen only gave a final sitting. The portrait at Government House, Adelaide is one of the originals by Ewins. Miss Roffe became Mrs. William Searcy.'

The images comprise mainly portraits of women, men and children. Includes people in fancy dress, a parade, and a young woman at her 21st birthday. The negatives were originally from Charles Hoffmann [assumed to be Hoffmann Photographics, Victor Harbor]. Kodak plates.

Pencil sketch on paper portraying Captain Charles Sturt. Montefiore was a friend of Sturt and made an original sketch in 1849. It is believed this artwork is a copy of that original sketch, which was used in an obituary to commemorate Sturt, after his death in 1869.

He was the eldest son of George Fife Angas. Captain Matthew Flinders. Portrait painted by Antoine Toussaint de Chazal (1770-1854) during Flinder's captivity in Ile de France in 1808. Ile de France (now Mauritius) was the home of planter de Chazal. He was an amateur painter and is known for his portrait of Royal Navy captain Matthew Flinders, painted in 1806-07

[General description] This is a sepia portrait of Robert Fotheringham in an oval frame. Robert and Thomas Fotheringham took over the family brewery along with their brother James. James and his brother Alexander arrived in the colony in 1838 and participated in the special survey of Gawler area by Light Finiss and Co. Their father David operated a whiskey distillery in Cambus Scotland. Along with brothers George and David, breweries were established by the brothers in Gawler, Kapunda and South Africa.

Christopher Giles

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Christopher Giles senior. He has a trim beard and moustache and wears a jacket and cravat with pin. He arrived in the colony in 1849 with substantial assets and took up a run at Ketchowla (in the state's north east) with Mr. H. Boucaut. The enterprise eventually failed due to severe drought and he moved to Adelaide in 1864. His son Christopher junior, trained as a surveyor, was associated with the Goyder Expedition and the Overland Telegraph.

[General description] This portrait of George Charles Hawker shows his head and shoulders, the face being in seven eights view. He has greying hair and a full beard and moustache. The portrait is entitled 'The late Hon.G. C. Hawker, M.A., M.P.' and is signed by the artist. He was a politician, a grazier and sheep breeder who owned Bungaree Station and an amateur horticulturalist.

[General descripiton] Head and shoulders portrait of a grey haired and bearded John McKinlay in three quarter view. He was commissioned in 1861 by the South Australian government to search for the missing Burke and Wills party. He discovered their fate and burial places on the Coopers Creek, then pushed on up to the Gulf of Carpentaria. His party endured much hardship but due to his outstanding leadership and bush skills survived to return to Adelaide by sea. [General description] Moodily lit portrait of Sir Douglas Mawson showing head and upper body in three quarter view, the subject looking at the camera. He is clean-shaven and wears a matching jacket and waistcoat, a wing collar and a tie. This portrait was probably taken soon after he returned from the successful Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-14. He was knighted in 1914. Jacob Montefiore, company director, free trade politician, general merchant, grazier, Jewish community leader, Member of the Upper House, playwright, shipping agent. The plaque attached to this portrait states "Portrait of Jacob Montefiore Esq. JP. FRGS. Sole Surviving Commissioner for the Colony of South Australia. Painted for the Art Gallery of Adelaide".

Robert and Emma Morris and family

Robert and Emma Morris and family

A photographic copy of what was probably an over-painted photographic portrait of members of the Morris family. Robert Morris and Emma Morris, nee Coombes, arrived in South Australia onboard the ship the 'Hesperides' in June 1876 with their three children Albert Edward, Walter Robert and Florence Ellen. Walter, Florence and their fourth child John, born 1877, died while the family were in South Australia. The family moved to New South Wales in about 1878. Daughter Mabel Martha was born in Bourke in 1879, son Percival in Cobar in 1881, and daughter Olive Maud Mary in Cobar in 1883. Percival died the same year. The portrait depicts, left to right, Olive, Robert, Albert, Mabel and Emma in about 1885. Another five children were born later. Most of the family, including Robert and Emma, relocated to Western Australia.

[General description] Upper body portrait of William John Samuel Pullen in seven eighths view. He stands with one arm resting on the back of a chair. He wears a chin curtain beard and his uniform is probably that of a Vice Admiral (his rank at the time the portrait was taken). He interrupted his naval career to join the South Australian Company as an officer and assistant-surveyor and sailed to South Australia with Colonel William Light. He remained in South Australia for some years before returning to the navy.

Charles Sturt, from a painting by Crossland. He was born in 1795 so that he would appear to have sat for this portrait in about 1849. However, according to the Adelaide Observer for March 12 1853, page 7, column 4, Crossland's portrait of Sturt had just recently been completed.
