Summary

[General descripiton] Head and shoulders portrait of a grey haired and bearded John McKinlay in three quarter view. He was commissioned in 1861 by the South Australian government to search for the missing Burke and Wills party. He discovered their fate and burial places on the Coopers Creek, then pushed on up to the Gulf of Carpentaria. His party endured much hardship but due to his outstanding leadership and bush skills survived to return to Adelaide by sea. [On back of photograph] 'Portrait of John McKinlay the explorer / Probably reproduced after his death from an old photograph'.
