Dublin-born George Augustus Labatt (1817-1895) was a prominent Adelaide barrister. His wife, Anna Frances (née Bagot, 1827-1910), was the daughter of Irish-born South Australian pastoralist Charles Hervey Bagot. The Labatts' residence was in Brougham Place, North Adelaide. When these magnificent studio portraits were taken by Frazer Smith Crawford in the mid 1860s, the various Labatt and Bagot families of North Adelaide were among the city's wealthiest and most influential. The portraits were most likely taken together in the same visit to the studio; they are quite possibly unique images. George Augustus' obituary was published in the Adelaide Advertiser on 4 October 1895: 'DEATH OF MR. G. A. LABATT. We regret to announce the death of Mr. George Augustus Labatt which occurred on Thursday morning. Mr. Labatt was born in 1817 at Rutland-square, Dublin, Ireland, and was the last surviving son of the late Dr. Samuel B. Labatt, a distinguished physician of that city, who was associated with the great Dr. Jenner in the introduction of vaccination. His mother was a sister of General Edmonds, who held a command at Waterloo. Mr. Labatt graduated at Trinity College, Dublin, a B.A. in 1839, and was called to the bar the following year. After practicing his profession for some years in Dublin, he came to this colony in 1853 to enter into partnership with his brother-in-law, the late Hon. J. T. Bagot, which connection lasted till 1870. He then practised his profession alone till 1882, when he was joined by his second son, Samuel, with whom be carried on business till the time of his death. Mr. Labatt took a keen interest in the founding of the Adelaide University, and was one of the original members of the senate of that body, but otherwise took no part in the public affairs of the colony. He has been in feeble health for some time past, and on Friday contracted influenza, which on Sunday assumed a very serious form, and he died on Thursday morning. He married a daughter of the late Mr. Charles Bagot, of Kilcorney House, King's County, Ireland, who survives him. He leaves a family of three sons and three daughters, the eldest daughter being married to Mr. Montgomery Orr, of Sydney, New South Wales.
