The construction of Mount Hope drain. One of the largest drainage proposals is the Mount Hope Drain which drains the area between Rivoli Bay and Symon. A cutting was established in the Woakwine Range to allow the water to drain into a swamp near the Mount Gambier and Beachport railway line, into Lake Frome and then into the sea.

First House at Mt. Schank

First House at Mt. Schank

The first house built at Mount Schank; occupied in 1894 by W. Thomas. According to a researcher, these buildings are actually the former flour mill erected by Dr. E. Wehl in 1862. It later became a distillery for Engelbrecht and Co. and was dismantled in 1979. The buildings were situated on Commercial Street West, Mount Gambier (opposite Vansittart Park.)

Class "WX" no. 18, Mt. Gambier. Acccording to a researcher, this is a South Australian Railways 'Q' class locomotive. The location looks to be the northern end of the Islington workshops.

Officers of the 10th Australian Infantry Regiment Militia, Adelaide Rifles. Officers in the front row (from left) are: W. R. McKeevor, Francis Malcolm Blair, Coghill, Stanley Price Weir (later 10th Battalion AIF), John James Hughes (later 32nd Battalion, AIF), Leonard Watkins Bickle and Oldham. Major Edward Castle Oldham (who died at Lone Pine on 25 April 1915) is third from the right in the front row. It would appear that this photo is roughly contemporary with the group in PRG 280/1/26/289.

PENOLA: The first house in Penola owned by Mr. McElroy and used as a base for immigrant single Irish women until they were married. Mother Mary Mackillop lived here while she was governess to children of the Cameron family at Penola Station.

GENERAL: Ruins of Adam Lindsay Gordon's home, at 59/61Penzance Street Glenelg, which he had rented after he arrived in Australia in November 1853 on the steam ship 'Julia'. He purchased the house in 1865 when he entered the South Australian parliament in the House of Assembly seat of Victoria. He gave up his Glenelg residence in March 1867, when he returned to Mount Gambier. [from information supplied by a researcher].

W. J. Browne

W. J. Browne

Studio portrait of W.J. Browne, grazier and physician. At one stage William Browne was South Australia's largest producer of wool. As a member of the House of Assembly he introduced a Bill to abolish the sale of Crown lands and to lease them out instead. This Bill was thrown out but a similar one was later passed in both houses. Browne lived in Mount Gambier and built Christ Church there.

Collection of photographs showing the life and conditions of sheep stations that Clement Penfold Smith worked on including Outalpa and Weekeroo near Mannahill, northeast of Peterborough, and Coola, near Mount Gambier. They show the homesteads, gardens, livestock, tanks, and land. Coola Station was 20 miles from Mount Gambier, comprising 13000 acres, and carried 6000 sheep and 1000 Hereford cattle.
