[Letter about L. Jarman and J. Jarman's exemption from military duties]

A letter dated 6th November 1916 from Lt. McKenzie, 58th Military Sub-Division, Mount Gambier, to Nesbit & Nesbit, the solicitors representing L. and J. Jarman. It states that they have been classed as unfit for military service on medical grounds and are therefore exempted from military duty.

Postcards received by Annie Beattie

A collection of postcards received over approximately ten years by Miss Annie Beattie, together a smaller number received by her younger sister, Emmie. The earlier ones to both sisters (approximately 1906-1910) are addressed to 'Dunn Street, Lower North Adelaide' [the family home]; during the same period a few are addressed 'c/- Jas. Marshall & Co. Rundle Street, City' [Jas. Marshall & Co. ran a drapers. importers & general furnishers' business at 24-34 Rundle Street]. There are a number addressed to Annie 'c/- Mrs Bowman, "Poltalloch", via Milang' (ca.1907); others are addressed 'Martindale Hall, Mintaro' (ca.1908-1909). By 1911 Annie appears to have returned to Adelaide. A final postcard is written by 'E.B.' [Emmie Beattie] to Miss Eva Decre. The postcards feature various views of Adelaide and surrounds, together with cards from Mount Gambier, Port Victor / Victor Harbor, Mildura, Kapunda, Wallaroo, Port Lincoln and Quorn. A half morocco over pebbled cloth album, inscribed on front pastedown 'Zur Erinnerung an Adelaide Sud-Australien / von Herrn & Frau Unbehaun / December 1899' [In memory of Adelaide, South Australia, from Mr & Mrs Unbehaun], and containing 24 window mounted silver gelatin prints, each 100 x 150 mm and with a manuscript caption on the album page beneath.

Family album of the Hursthouse Family

The album contains photographs relating primarily to the life of John Wilson Hursthouse (1913-1945) including family camping holidays to the South-East, Yorke Peninsula and Eyre Peninsula between 1925-1930; schooling at Queen's School, North Adelaide, and Roseworthy Agricultural College, Boy Scouts, Army training at Kapunda Military camp, shearing at Middle Camp near Cowell and Elbow Hill (1934-1936); wheat harvesting at Gum Park, Yongala 1937; and training as an RAAF pilot at Parafield Aerodrome. The album includes a family portrait of John (Jack) with his parents Calvert Fearon Hursthouse and Lilian Ethel (nee Preshaw), and his siblings Helen Mary and Harold Richmond (Dick). Another photograph includes his son David as a child.

[On back of photograph] 'South Australian contingent at the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, London 1897. Drafted from mounted units from various parts of S.A. Under the command of Lieut. Col. James Rowell (sitting in centre), on his right is Capt. Wilson, of Mt Gambier, left is Lieut. Hay. Sitting on the ground, from left to right, are Sergeant J.E. Rowell; Trumpeter Davis; and Sergeant Major de Passey. For a list of those who were selected to form the contingent see Observer, 24 April 1897, page 31, column d'.

Series of 102 black and white lantern slides numbered 40-145, illustrating the development of Adelaide, 1839-1914. Some slides are of maps, lithographs and sketches made by nineteenth century artists and lithographers. The series juxtaposes views of Adelaide buildings and streets and key landmarks at several time periods, to show the changes and developments in Adelaide to 1914. The streets in focus in this series include King William Street, North Terrace, Stephen's Place, Rundle Street, Hindley Street, Pulteney Street, Grenfell Street, Pirie Street, Gouger Street, Gawler Place and Hindmarsh Square. The following slides are not held: 1-39, 63, 67, 81, 128.
