[General description] The recently completed Mount Gambier Hospital, built of stone in the Italian gothic style featuring towers and cloistered verandahs. Its foundation stone was laid on the 12th February, 1867 by Mr James C. Lyon. [General description] People pose for the photographer under the verandah of this two storey stone building. A horse and cart stands in front of the store. See B 19739 for an earlier view before the addition of the verandah. William Allen Crouch arrived in South Australia on the'Templar' in 1845 and became a pastoralist. He arrived in Mount Gambier in 1849 and in 1852 he took over H. Crouch's store which he ran until he sold the business in 1870. St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and Manse Mount Gambier. has been serving the people since Reverend James Don began his ministery in 1858. The Gothic revival church, built in 1870-71 was constructed of square rock faced with pink dolomite with cut limestone dessings. The spire was entirely rebuilt in 1885 and partially rebuilt again in 1928. The church in this photograph replaced a small presbyterian kirk which was built in 1860. The manse was constructed in 1910-11. The building is designed in Federation style and constructed in dressed Mount Gambier stone with gables, crenellated porch and bay window detailing
