Photograph album of the Parker and Davidson Families

Photograph album of the Parker and Davidson Families

The album shows aspects of station life at various sheep properties in the far north east of South Australia and the Broken Hill region, among them Buckalow, Bimbowrie, Oulnina Park, Telechie, Burta, Topar, Tantallon and Yalcowinna as well as visits to other stations in New South Wales and Victoria namely Morundah, Widgeongully and Tolarno. Three young women thought to be Grace Langloh Parker (1895-1987) and her sisters Wilga Maud (1898-?) and Una Geraldine Davidson, nee Parker (1901-1986) are central to many of the photographs and it may be that the album was compiled by Grace Parker. Holiday visits were made to Victor Harbor, Port Elliot, Inman Valley, Second Valley, Mount Gambier, Portland Victoria, Sydney and Tasmania. A number of photographs relate to the BHP towns, Iron Knob and Broken Hill. Two of the Parker daughters, thought to be Wilga and Grace, accompanied their Mother on a voyage from Sydney to the Celebes and Java in 1926, including sightseeing at Macassar in the Celebes, the Mount Bromo Volcano, Sand Sea, Borobodur, and other places in Java with the homeward voyage via Singapore, Port Darwin, Thursday Island and Cairns.

A steam locomotive decorated with flags in South Australia

A steam locomotive decorated with flags in South Australia

Railway staff and others standing by a flag-decorated stationary locomotive in a railway yard. This is believed the Mount Gambier railway yards - the track layout, with the station on the left, and the goods shed (right background) conform to the Mount Gambier yard plan of 13/12/1912. Taken between December 1911 and 1914. The first two carriages are of 50ft lavatory type ('Long Toms'), first built by SAR and issued December 1911 to South East narrow gauge lines. The locomotive is of Wx Class which, with un-rebuilt W Class, were the main SE motive power until 1914 when the Y Class was introduced (and would have been used on trains of importance). On 28 November 1917 a broad gauge line from Heywood (Victoria) was opened and the tracks in the photo were modified to mixed gauge. Also a new station with high level platforms was built closer to Wolseley. Badges of six states mounted upon the locomotive may indicate the train was of some Federal importance. [Information supplied by David Parsons.]

Photographs of W.A. Robjohns

The series comprises 15 albums housing 1,973 photographs, most of which were taken by photographer W.A. Robjohns ca.1920-1966. Album covers were numbered and labelled by Robjohns. The sequence is incomplete, however, as only volumes 1-9, 12-14, 15, 20 and 23 have been donated. Robjohns' brief descriptions of content on the covers and spines are incomplete. For further descriptions of place names and subjects contained in each album, SEE details below. The albums contain small black and white prints, mostly undated, with captions by W.R. Robjohns. Also sepia and postcard prints, and a few hand-tinted prints. A small number of images were taken by other photographers, several of whom have been identified by Robjohns. Images depict Adelaide suburbs, city scenes and country towns, with an emphasis on rural landscapes, parks and reserves, rivers, reservoirs, streets, houses, churches, businesses and shop fronts, and public celebrations and processions. Also included are images of the Robjohns family on picnics and holiday outings, and their homes, cars and pets. A number of photos were duplicated or enlarged by Robjohns and appear in more than one album.
