[General description] Parked cars, trees and the premises of Ronald S. Tanner. The large building behind Tanner's was the premises of Foy & Gibson's until the mid fifties when the department store became Cox Foys and moved further west along Rundle Street. The building was taken over by various Government Departments, later demolished mid 70s. Hindmarsh Square, Adelaide
South west corner of Hindmarsh Square and Grenfell Street, Adelaide, on September 25th, 1923. The frontage of the building is 26 yards. Compare with a view taken in 1919 before the erection of this building. A cantilever verandah was added to the front of Perdriau's Rubber Company and Compton & Adams in 1926. On the far right appears J. Galligan's factory which did unholstery work and manufactured mattresses. This business still survives in 2006 as Galligan's Mattress Company".

Hindmarsh Square, west side, November 1st 1901, right side of the Y.W.C.A. is 30 yards south of Grenfell Street and frontage is 13 yards. The Young Woman's Christian Association is housed in an attractive two storey red brick building decorated with a small tower on one corner. Stone plaques either side of the front steps state 'Lady Colton Memorial' and 'YWCA This stone was laid by Miss Colton July 12th 1900'. The building has numerous stone carvings including coats of arm.

[General description] The Y.W.C.A. Building was constructed in 1900 of red bricks in the Federation style. An impressive entrance with tall pillars either side supporting a balcony and a corner turret are features of the building, designed by architects G. de Lacy Evans and R J Haddon of Melbourne. Congregational Church, Hindmarsh Square. Under the guidance of the Reverend Francis Cox the church was opened on 5 September, 1862.It was designed by George Abbott and had seating for 500 people. It has twin steeples at the front of the church and faces the grassy square.

Pirie Street, Adelaide
Aurora Hotel, north east corner of Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square, Adelaide. The left side of the Dining hall is 28 yards north of Pirie Street. In May, 1912 when this photo was taken, the licensee was Henry Gepp. It was first known as the Black Eagle from the 29th June,1859, then had several name changes until 1894 when it was named the Aurora. It traded under that name until the 1st December,1983 when it was demolished.
