[General description] A man pushes a laden handcart past a one storey group of shops. A sign 'Grodts Corner' appears above the central doorway. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 210 / South west corner of Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square / May 31, 1926 / Pulteney St. frontage of one storey shops: 20 1/2 yards. Pirie St. frontage of one storey shops: 33 1/2 yards.' (Another hand) 'All the premises including the two storey building on the left, but excluding the Globe Timber Mills on the right, were demolished in 1926. Pirie Street, south side, September 27th 1932. These buildings stood on the south side of Pirie Street near the south eastern corner of Hindmarsh Square. AK Gross quality butchers stands next to WG Thompson motor car repairers, car parking, JT Mitchell metal sheet welding and Axford and Forrest car engineers. [General description] Looking east along Pirie Street from Hindmarsh Square. Business and light industrial premises are seen along the street. The Aurora Hotel (on the left) opened in 1859 as the Black Eagle, its name changed to the Aurora in 1894. Demolished in 1983 despite spirited campaigning to save it. A man riding his motorcycle with sidecar is amongst street traffic. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 211 / Pirie Street, south side / Looking east from Pulteney Street / February 20th 1929'.

Date changed from 1940 to 1955 as this style of ferry came out in the early 1950s, but could be an even later date (truck on board is obscured by gate). Most of them were built at Morgan by the Highways Dept slip yard and Arnold's slip yard next door [from information supplied].
