Tanderra Girls' Home
Tanderra Girls' Home was opened by the South Australian Council of the United Aborigines Mission at 4 Stamford Street, Parkside in 1952. It was established as accommodation for older Aboriginal girls who had left Colebrook Home. It accommodated up to ten girls. In later years Tanderra moved to these larger premises at 221 Henley Beach Road, Torrensville. The Home closed in 1973. This building was formerly the St Ives Private Hospital.


Waikerie Institute
[General description] A small crowd stands around a brass band at the opening of this substantial stone memorial hall, which cost approximately 3,000 pounds to build, the contractor being Mr. T Gilbert of Henley Beach. Sir William Sowden officiated. [On back of photograph] 'Reproduced in the 'Advertiser', August 31st, 1928 / Waikerie Institute'.


Battery electric tram
Trial run of Julien's battery powered electric tram on the Henley Beach Line. This was the first electric tram, but it was unsuccessful.The first electric tram in Adelaide, January 9, 1889. [A report on the trial appeared in the 'South Australian Register', Thursday 10 January 1889, page 6.]


Reedbeds Pioneers
[General description] Pioneers of the Reedbeds district. Sixteen senior men and women pose for the photographer, one row of eight seated, the other standing behind. They are wearing their 'Sunday best'. The Reedbeds was the name given to a large tract of flat, swampy land, in the Fulham-Henley Beach area into which the River Torrens emptied. Identified by a relative: Man 4th from right, back row, is John Edward Rowell, lady 3rd from right, front row, is Mary Ann Butterfield. Man 2nd from right, front row, is Henry George Butterfield.


Motor cycle
Clifford Hart of Henley Beach Road, Mile End was the owner of the motor cycle. It is possibly Mrs Hart (Grace Margaret) in the sidecar. The motorcycle is a Reading Standard c.1923 made in Reading Pennsylvania. Information courtesy Veteran Car Club of SA.


Wireless Telegraphy
Wireless telegraphy experimental equipment at the Observatory, West Terrace. Successful transmission was accomplished between Adelaide and Henley Beach in 1899.


Signal Station
Signal Station, West Terrace, opposite Franklin Street, 7th May 1958 being demolished. Adelaide Observatory was built in 1860 and contained a domed equatorial room. Experimental wireless telegraphy equipment transmitted between Adelaide and Henley Beach in 1899. Richard Davis was appointed Signal Man on October 28, 1847.He died there in 1878 aged 69.

LOCKLEYS: Premises of the Prison Gate Brigade Home at Lockleys, a Salvation Army rehabilitation centre on Henley Beach Road photographed on 27 July 1893; it was established in a farm house previously owned by John White Mellor in 1890 and only functioned for a short time, closing in about 1904.
