Summary

Trial run of Julien's battery powered electric tram on the Henley Beach Line. This was the first electric tram, but it was unsuccessful.The first electric tram in Adelaide, January 9, 1889. [A report on the trial appeared in the 'South Australian Register', Thursday 10 January 1889, page 6.]

Historical information

Adelaide had to wait a number of years after this for the trams to be electrified in 1909. William Goodman was appointed General Manager and Chief Engineer in May 1908. He designed all aspects of Adelaide's new electric tramway system.
