Original costume designs for the 1936 Centenary Pageants and theatre productions. Many were for Heather Gell's 'Heritage', others for the street pageant 'Pageant of Progress' and the 'Landing at Glenelg and the Proclamation'. Also included are copies of contemporary newspaper reports on the costumes and events as well as reviews of Max Afford's play 'Colonel Light the Founder', correspondence regarding the pageant, and biographical notes on Thelma Afford's work.

Stephen King : SUMMARY RECORD

Papers of Stephen King junior, surveyor, member of the John McDouall Stuart Expedition, comprising sketches, photographic cartes, correspondence, testimonials and newspaper cuttings relating to the Expedition, diaries and field books of surveys in the Northern Territory, Overland Telegraph and South East, papers of J.W. Billiatt relating to an English colony in Paraguay, and postcard letters to his grandson Tom King, son of Freer Barnes King, and F.B. King's wife Isabella, nee Macdonald from female relatives. Item 275, Stephen King's 4-part panorama sketches 'The Great Exploring Expedition on the march from Chambers Creek January 8th 1862' has been digitised as No. 39/1-4 of a collection of Stephen King drawings of the expedition. See B 486/1-45 in the South Australiana Database. A later donation of items collected by Miss Shirley Cameron Wilson and donated by her executors after her death in 2003 is arranged and described as items 338-519 as an addendum to the original item listing of 1994. They relate to Stephen King junior, his parents and his brother-in-law John William Billiatt and their families over several generations. Includes the journal of the Billiatts' return trip to England on the 'Coonatto' in 1863-64. Photographs have not been listed individually but arranged in groups from item 471-480. Copies have been made and originals placed in Reserve collection. Papers of the Thomas family, pioneers, comprising a diary, reminiscences and letters by Mary Thomas describing the voyage of the 'Africaine' in 1836 and life in the colony. Includes several letters by Robert Thomas, including a letter to the Colonial Office protesting offical deference to Aboriginal occupation, extracts from the diary of Mary Thomas, daughter, Margaret Robert and correspondence and a scrapbook of Sir Robert Kyffin Thomas, grandson. Also contains Thomas and Harris family wills, marriage certificates and associated papers, memorances, papers and a wax seal related to the Thomas family history, and versions of the Diary of Mary Thomas. Small photograph album with brass clasp with carte de visite photographs of Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and members of his party who visited South Australia in 1867 on the 'Galatea', made up by Caroline Louisa Turton, daughter of Sir Dominick Daly. Inside the album is written in pencil: 'Mother's book of Naval friends when in S. Australia, officers of the Galatea &c - Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's son who visited Adelaide in HMS 'Galatea' in Nov 1867'. A few photographs relate to the visit of H.M.S. 'Falcon' and H.M.S. 'Curacoa in 1865. Some are photographs of wives of officers, and a few are of Turton relatives in the Royal Navy. Some photographs had been placed between pairs of photographs and have been numbered with an 'A' and now housed separately. See MORE INFO 'Contents' for details.

Inscription on reverse reads 'To dear Mrs Robertson from P Stanton' [i.e. addressed to Thorburn Brailsford Robertson's mother Sarah Robertson or his widow, Jane Winifred Robertson). A later hand has crossed out the inscription and added 'Miss Phoebe after her 90th Birthday'.
