A collection of photographs relating to Glenelg and nearby suburbs in the south-west of Adelaide. Subjects include local sites and public events. A number of images are of popular past events, the Milk Carton Regatta and the Birdman Rally. According to brief paperwork attached to the photos (now removed), many of the photographs were published in the Guardian Messenger. Where more than date has been supplied, one of the dates may refer to the date of publication. See 'contents' for details of individual images.

Series 073: Glenelg Sewage Treatment Works

Aerial photographs of the Glenelg Sewage Treatment Works (later the Glenelg Wastewater Treatment Plant), between Military Road and the beach at Glenelg North. The site comprises a main building, several smaller outbuildings, open treatment ponds, a water tower, and a house. The site is surrounded by sand dunes and low coastal shrubs, and on the dunes facing the sea are a large number of shacks.

Motor vehicles and people on Jetty Road, Glenelg. Shops are on the south side opposite the junction with Waterloo Street. They include Fassina Liquor Merchants at 104 Jetty Road, Grundy's Shoes at 102 Jetty Road, Caruso's Fresh Foods at 100 Jetty Road and The Reject Shop at 98 Jetty Road.

E. A. Wright's residence, Glenelg - "The Olives". Architect Edmund William Wright built "The Olives" in 1864. Note on the back of the photograph supplied by Glenelg Town Clerk 8/11/1941 says "This property faces Olive Street which is comparatively new, and used to face High Street, which was owned and occupied by the late Mr AJ Roberts for many years. It is known as "The Olives" and is at present a guest home. Most of the land surrounding it has been subdivided into small residential allotments".

Mrs. A. Thomas' residence - 'Oriental' at 16 South Esplanade, Glenelg. This property faces the South Esplanade, two doors north of Kent Street and is known as the "Oriental". (The address would have been Albert Terrace at the time this photograph was taken.) This house has three levels of lacework: the ground and first floor balconies are trimmed and balustraded with it, and the roof carries a small parapet of lace around the flag pole.

'Essenside' at Glenelg

View of Edward M. (Ned) Bagot's home 'Essenside', on the northern corner of Moseley and College Streets, Glenelg. Bagot acquired the land in 1868 and erected an eight-roomed house on the site. Financial difficulties forced him to sell the house in 1876; it was acquired by Andrew Tennant in 1877 who made significant extensions to the original building. It was demolished in 1972.

Pier Hotel, Glenelg. In the foreground you can see Mr William Jewell who, despite losing his legs in a rail accident in India, was an excellent horseman and swimmer. He also was an excitable character who, in 1897, used his walking stick to crack Premier Charles Cameron Kingston across the head when the two met in King William Street. The Chronicle reported on 25 Dec 1897 that Mr Jewell "...has always been remarkable for a hot temper and volubility in speech." It went on to report that when he was sentenced to six weeks' imprisonment with hard labor he stated "Oh, I can work hard, and if I don't earn my tucker I won't eat it.".

Pier Hotel, Glenelg in the 1870's. Part of the hotel has three stories complete with a flag pole on the roof. Verandahs surround the first and second floors. The railings of the wooden jetty can be seen in the foreground. Stone steps are leading directly to the first level from a sloping garden bordering the beach. Another flagpole stands in these gardens. The proprietors of the Pier Hotel for most of the 1870's were the Moseleys.

Pier Hotel, Glenelg. In 1866 H Moseley junior was the proprietor. The Pier Hotel was the first building to be built in 1856. The foundation stone for the hotel was laid in 1856 by Mayor RB Colley. The hotel cost 7000 pounds to build. The photograph shows a three storey building attached to a two storey annex at the rear. A wide verandah sits at the front of the hotel to take full advantage of the beach views to the west.
