A collection of photographs of people and events associated with South Australian politicians. In addition to the photographs, it also includes a number of photocopied pages with additional photos and the captions which were used with the images (items 68-79), and a 35mm slide of an unidentified man (item 80). A collection of First World War pins, badges, medals, silk embroidered postcards, photograph and cards arranged in a picture frame painted gold, measuring 32.5 x 32.5 cm. Items relate to the war service of Lance-Corporal Leslie James Henry Harris, Service No. 77, 43rd Battalion, and in memory of his younger brother Lance-Corporal Horace Harris, Service No. 5352, 27th Battalion, who was killed in action in France on 20 September 1917. GENERAL: Men of the B.A.N.Z. Antarctic Research Expedition, 1929-31, grouped around a Union Jack flag, cheering and holding their hats in the air. According to a researcher, this is at Proclamation Rock or Island. BANZ or BANZARE was at Proclamation Rock or Island on Monday 13th January, 1930. From Eric Douglas's log "...8am In clear water now about 1/4 mile off this rock which appears about 700 ft high. 9am A party left in the motor boat (ten of them) their main job being to hoist the flag. At 12 noon we saw them on top of this rock and observed the flag was hoisted. Stu and I spent the morning working on our machine (aeroplane)...The party returned at 3pm with specimens of rock, penguins, birds etc".

Large group photograph of the members of the St. Augustine's Ladies' Auxilliary, 18th Battery, affiliated with the Unley Church. Embroidered auxilliary flag seen held in the centre of the first row. According to a researcher, this would be a support group for the 18th Field Artillery Battery of the 6th Brigade of the 2nd Division of the AIF in world war one (The Division is the diamond on the flag). The flag would almost certainly be for the unit.

The steel barque 'Glenafton', 1166 tons, docked in an unidentified port. [See 'Ba', and the Norwegian 'Deka'] [steel barque, 1166 tons. ON89089. 231.3 x 35.7 x 20.3. Built 1884 (12) W Hamilton and Co. Port Glasgow. Owners: Dundee Shipowners Co. Ltd. (WC Taylor and Co. managers) registered Dundee. c.1908 sold Norway and renamed 'Deka' c.1914 renamed 'Ba' under Norwegian flag, and later under the flag of Uruguay (various sources say this vessel became renamed as 'Justicia' under Bolivian flag but I am unable to confirm - RHP)]. According to a Dutch researcher, "The photo is taken in the harbour of Delftshaven, part of Rotterdam. The Glenafton lies alongside the Voorhaven quay. The windmill in the background is the 'Waakzaamheid'." Another researcher says that, "the ship lay moored to the Achterhaven".

The images comprise businesses and buildings in the Victor Harbor township, memorials and the bowling green. Includes a football team and other townspeople. The negatives were originally from Charles Hoffmann [assumed to be Hoffmann Photographics, Victor Harbor].

Proclamation Ceremony of the transfer of the Northern Territory to the Commonwealth of Australia - 2nd January 1911, Mr Mitchell in black. According to a researcher, there is a copy of this photograph on the front verandah of Government House in Darwin. Notes from the back of the photograph say "At the Proclamation ceremony on January 2nd, 1911 at the Residency, Port Darwin. Mr Justice Mitchell read proclamation. Mrs Mitchell hoisted Commonwealth flag under the Union Jack to the accompaniment of "God Save the King". Mr Justice Mitchell gave a patriotic address after which refreshments were served to the public at the Residency. About 500 of whites, Aborigines and Asiatics attended and the function was a great success. The photo is taken during the address. Mrs Mitchell stands on the immediate right of the Judge. The two robed figures in audience are Messrs Kelly and RED Mallam. Mrs N Holtz stands at the right of Mrs Mitchell".

John Hill of H. M. S. Buffalo who hoisted the flag at Glenelg on December 28, 1836. He is shown wearing a sailor's uniform, complete with a straw hat, with the name of his ship printed on the hat band. He has his arm resting on the flag and is holding a smaller pennant in the other hand.

Regatta on the Torrens : 17 December 1910. The photograph is captioned "Henley-on-Torrens" 17.12.10. It shows spectators on a crowded riverbank watching a race as a coxed four crosses the finishing line. The event is being held outside the Adelaide Rowing Club. Several school boys wearing straw boater are standing near the flag pole which denotes the finishing line. The official boat is the "Reliance". Flags and pennants fly from the club rooms. This event was the first Henley-on-Torrens and was the brainchild of Adelaide Rowing Club man Doswell. Adelaide City Council were convinced to sponsor the event which provided a carnival atmosphere complete with drinks. food and side shows.

The composite ship, 'Darra', 999 tons, anchored in an unidentified port [composite ship, 999 tons. ON52729. 190.0 x 33.5 x 21.0. Built 1865 (6) A. Hall and Co. Aberdeen. Owners Anderson, Anderson and Co. Registered London. By the end of the 1870's the vessel had been rigged down to a barque. In 1885 acquired by Trinder, Anderson and Co. (not connected with Anderson, Anderson and Co) registered Aberdeen. Throughout her life associated with the Australian trade. Under the Orient flag the Darra was more familiar with the eastern coast of Australia, while under the Trinder Anderson flag she was more prone to visit the western shores. The vessel was hulked in New Zealand, having been sold to Australian owners in 1888, and the Westport Coal Company in 1899, and very likely hulked about the same time, if not earlier].

Sold in 1909 to F Laiesz and renamed 'Pinnas'. Abandoned in a sinking condition in the South Atlantic 25 April 1929. While under the British flag made some visits to Australia but was better known under the Flying 'P' house flag of Laiesz in the South American nitrate trades. About 1930 passed to French control but remaining under the Danish flag. About 1934 purchased by Gustav Erikson, and reverted to the name 'Kylemore' and broken up in 1936].
