Summary

Pen and ink drawing depicting a caricature of a man chased by a lion wielding a British flag. The artwork is overlayed with watercolour, which is also applied as a wash in areas. Inscribed by the artist, 'Mr. Kruger and the British Lion. To Kenneth, Pt Victor 27.9.00'. Signed in initials diagram of JHC, bottom left corner.

General notes

Inscription on reverse: 'This cartoon of Mr. Kruger was drawn at Port Victor (Victor Harbour) in (27) September 1900 by JOHN HENRY CHINNER. Mr. Chinner (1865-1933) besides being a talented artist was a most versatile man. He was at one time Manager in S.A. (South Australia) of the Atlas Insurance Company; he was a Sunday School Superintendent; a naturalist; twice mayor of Unley 1903/5, 1910/12; and Bowl's skipper of Unley. He drew for the Bulletin (newspaper) and for the Adelaide Express & Journal with "Notable Citizens". He even did three cartoons for London "Punch", one of which converted the Royal Standard into a cricket flag to be flown at Old Trafford when Royalty appeared. This cartoon of Mr. Kruger is dedicated "to Kenneth" who was then 4 1/2 years old - afterwards Brigadier Sir Kenneth Wills.'

Historical information

Pen name 'JHC' - John Henry Chinner (1865-1933) was a prolific part-time cartoonist and full-time manager of an insurance firm. His work appeared in a wide range of publications, including Lantern 1880s, Quiz 1890-, Critic 1898-, Express and telegraph, Saturday Journal, Bulletin (Sydney), Punch (London), and Australian Christian Commonwealth, Observer.
