Strangways Terrace

Strangways Terrace. Left side of house is 75 yards east of the western boundary of acre 756. Frontage: 17 yards. This two storey bluestone house has a bow window to one side of the frontdoor. The house is named Parramatta Villa and has an established front garden filled with shrubs and bushes. It was built in 1871, designed in the Victorian Period by architects Rowland Rees. GH Catchlove also employed these architects to build another large house next door at number 55 Strangways Terrace. All the embellishments were made of wood. The carved wooden capitals in the form of bunches of grapes to the verandah and balcony posts are unique. The original owner, George Henry Catchlove arrived in Adelaide on board the "Hooghly" in 1839 with his widowed father. Together with other syndicate members GH Catchlove owned property in what is now Eden Hills.

[General description] This red brick Federation cottage has a similar neighbour on the left. It is raised off street level with a basement and staircase leading to its front door. It has a half-timbered gable at front and a bullnose verandah with iron lace. A sign on the verandah reads 'Andrew Benko, Architect'. [General description] "Neidpath", a mansion in the Federation style, complete with gables, wide verandahs and cupola tower, probably built in late 1890s. It is the family home of James Wigham McGregor, wool broker and scourer, woolen cloth manufacturer and pastoralist. He founded the firm of J.W. McGregor and Sons, Limited, woolbrokers and established the Torrenside woollen mills at Thebarton. Its portico has been removed, bay windows with window shutters have been installed, the front entrance re-located and the stone walls have been rendered. [General description] This new hospital laundry building is of red brick with an iron roof which has a ridge vent, probably to remove steam. A red brick wall provides the boundary for the hospital grounds. [General description] This ornate building is the Huntsman Hotel which existed on this site from 1849 in humbler form, at some time rebuilt. It traded until 1960 (when this view was taken) then it was delicenced and sold to the Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church of Australia formally came into being in 1967 and this building was its federal church office. It has since being reinstated as a hotel, trading as the Archer. Next door are two small single storey freestanding cottages, then a shop which displays an advertisement for Viceroy Tea. [General description] A rendered house in Barnard Street near Jeffcott Street in North Adelaide. The symmetrical house has a portico above the front door and shutters on the windows.
