[General description] Shops and business' on the corner of Ward and O'Connell Streets in North Adelaide. H. Whittington Bootmakers is on the corner, next door to Arthur Coward tyre repairers and next door to this is Silver and Killicoat's Garage and petrol bowser. A lady is crossing the tramlines at this intersection. [On back of photograph] Acre 738. South east corner of Ward Street and O'Connell Street, January 21st 1926. The two storey shop on the corner was demolished in 1926 to make way for a petrol service station. See B 3730. Far side of Silver and Killicoat's is 33 and a half yards south of ward street.

The small cottage next door appears to have a shingle or slate roof. Jeffcott Street looking north, about 1900. Near side of house on extreme right (on east side of Jeffcott St) is 210 yards south of Ward Street. Christ Church can be seen in the middle of the photograph. Bishop Augustus Short initiated the building of Christ Church North Adelaide in 1848 and the building was consecrated in 1849. In 1852 the Rectory was built next door to the church.

[General description] Set in leafy gardens, this symmetrical two storey house has a central tower with a cupola over its front entrance. It has a wide front verandah with lattice and iron work decoration. Its stone and wrought iron front wall has brick pillars supporting tall gates. [General description] The ivy-clad tower and part of the roof of 'Carclew' can be seen beyond garden plants and the stone wall on which is mounted a bronze plaque. The plaque commemorates the departure of John McDouall Stuart's expedition acoss Australia which left from this spot on the 25th October, 1861, having lunched in the house which previously stood on this site. "Carclew", North Adelaide

"Carclew", Strangways Terrace, North Adelaide: the south eastern facade of the residence of Sir Langdon Bonython. The acre of land was sold many times before James Chambers purchased it in 1861 and built a two storey home. James Chambers sponsored John McDouall Stuart's epic expedition across Australia. A grander house was built in 1897 by Sir Hugh Dennison and later sold it to the Bonython family. Sir Langdon named the house Carclew after his ancestor's land in Cornwall.
