[General description] This view shows the the Wakefield Hotel with the Central Picture Theatre on the left, taken from the opposite side of the road. A stone building, with cream brick dressings, the Wakefield Hotel has existed on this site since 1864. In 1927 its licensees were M.G. Henderson and V. Kenny. [General description] The Central Picture Theatre has been recently upgraded to give it a distinctly Art Deco look. There are movie posters displayed at street level and a beauty salon and chocolate shop on either side of the theatre doors. [General description] The Wakefield Hotel had a makeover around the same time as its neighbour, the Central Picture Theatre. Also in the Art Deco style its windows have been altered, its stonework has been rendered and it now features a tiled dado and door surrounds. [General description] Workmen, one up on the roof, are busy with the early stages of demolition work on this single storey stone cottage. Materials are being loaded on to an early buckboard style vehicle with a tray. [General description] Built in 1857, this bluestone church has an impressive octagonal tower. The Sunday School building, to the right of the church, was commenced in 1863. [General description] On the left is S.A. Motor Painters and A.S. Adamson Coach and Motor Trimmers. A hand barrow is propped in front of the building. In the centre an old buckboard truck is parked in front of a row of cottages. On the right is the premises of G J Wheeler (known as Cheapside House) which had its second storey added in 1909; previously it had been rented since 1888 from its owner John Follett.
