South Australia Police first motorised prison van

This new motor van displays the brand name 'Bean' on its radiator. It replaced the earlier horse-drawn 'Black Maria' which was sold at auction in May 1928 for 8 pounds to Mr. A. A. Edwards, M.H.A., who used it as a bathing machine at a local beach. Text on the back of the photograph reads 'Reproduced in 'Advertiser', May 23, 1928 / Prison van introduced in 1928 for the conveyance of prisoners between the Supreme Court and the Gaols at Yatala and Adelaide / May 1928'. A member of the S.A. Police Historical Society stated that 'this the SA Police first motorised prison van. A 1928, 14 horse power, four cylinder Bean 25-30 cwt light truck chasis, on which the van body was built in Adelaide. SAPOL took possession of the vehicle in June, 1928. It saw extensive police service and carried over 5,000 prisoners each year. SAPOL traded in the Bean on a new Dodge prison van in 1941.

Originally 4-8-2 but modified for booster with a new trailing truck. Made by Armstrong UK (1923?) after appointment of Mr Webb from the USA. In late 1930's all but 503 and 506 were partially streamlined in the style of the Southern Pacific Railroad 'Daylights'.]

[General description] This row of stone terrace houses has street level verandahs whose posts are topped with decorative iron lace. The corner end of the terrace has a section which includes an upper floor balcony. A flatbed truck is parked at the kerb. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 70 / Hindley Street, south side / Aug. 10,1926 / On the extreme left is Morphett Street. The extreme right is 51 1/2 yards west of Morphett Street.' Sign says Kuomintang Chinese Nationalist Party in Chinese and English characters.

[General description] The Alliance Assurance Company building under construction. A small corregated iron site office, perched atop scaffolding, displays a sign which notes the name of the building contractor: J. King & Son of Hindmarsh. A tip-truck is backed up to the entrance of the site. Next door is the recently completed Trustee Building. See B 4195 for the completed Alliance building. [General description] The Grenfell Buildings were erected in 1900 and this corner section was first the office for the Castle Salt Co-operative Company. In 1927 it is now the premises of the Commercial Bank. A flatbed truck turns the corner in front of the building and a pedestrian crosses the road in the foreground. Taylor's Motorcycle shop, agents for B.S.A. and Indian Motorcycles, has been built into the side of what was once a fine church building, still with damaged stained glass in its windows. (See B 71558 for the Congregational Church). On the left is Knuckey's tyre shop. Motorcycles and a truck are parked at the kerb. Grenfell Street, south side, on January 12th 1959. The frontage of the cottage on the corner of Tam O'Shanter Place is 10 3/4 yards. For a view of buildings on right of cottage see B 14205. The car on the right is a Standard Vanguard. It is parked outside Jacka & Moulds, Motor Engineers. Being opposite the East End Market this firm, established in the 1930s, repaired the market gardeners trucks like the one in the centre. These were often very old and in poor condition and some parts had to be fabricated on site. At the time of this photo, the firm was owned by Mr. O.L.(Ossie) Jacka and Mr. Harold Moulds. Mr. O.R. (Ray) Jacka (Ossie's son) was in charge of the workshop. The firm was wound up in the late sixties and the premises taken over by H.L. Bananas. The cottage next door was demolished. See B 21114 for a photo taken on the 6th November, 1970.
