Railway Station, Pinnaroo

Locomotive leaving the Railway Station, Pinnaroo. The line opened from Tailem Bend to Pinnaroo in 1906 and was extended to the state border in 1915. the photograph shows the locomotive pulling grain trucks and also a passenger carriage. The railway line was the means to open up the agricultural lands with the supply of goods and services from rural centres sustaining the remote area.

"Big Lizzie" the desert train. Designed for use as the prime mover of a kind of road train. Was not successful because of its great wieght and slowness. Was used for clearing scrub in Victoria.

Jervois Bridge, Port Adelaide. Railway tracks occupied the centre of the bridge and were separated from vehicle traffic by cast iron kerbs. A locomotive pulling four trucks successfuly crossed the bridge in 1877. In 1911 the Port Adelaide - Semaphore railway line was shifted from the Jervois Bridge to a specially constructed railway span immediately upstream to the Port River Railway Bridge.

[General description] The MV 'Minnipa" is berthed at Port Lincoln. Some people have alighted from the ship whilst others wait to embark. In the foreground are railway trucks for movement of cargo. Owned by the Adelaide Steamship Company the "Minnipa" provided a twice weekly goods and passenger service from Adelaide to Port Lincoln from 1927 until 1960. [General description] This rail line leads the eye out to the end of the jetty where a coastal steamer is moored. The line is for hand trucks which are used to move cargo from the store to the ships. A group of men are gathered inside a half finished structure on the right where they appear to be having refreshments. Perhaps this is the opening of this jetty, privately built by Mr. Luke Cullen in 1877. On the left there is a brush fence, probably to prevent sand drifting across from the dunes.

[General description] Part B of panorama of Esplanade at Semaphore, with part of the foreshore reserve being seen in the foreground. (This series consists of five sections to be fitted together.) This section shows the Esplanade with motor vehicles including a stationary truck advertising Port Mineral Waters. A pair of horses stand patiently harnessed to a Woodroofe wagon. These delivery vans are probably supplying the Evancourt Private Hotel, on the opposite side of the road.
