Clark, Harold Ernest, c. 1918, Manuscript, D 8725(L)
Transcript version of a diary kept by Sergeant Harold Clark, from his departure from Australia in July 1916 to 19 January 1917, printed as a pamphlet by Scrymgour & Sons, Adelaide. 'Accompanying the pamphlet diary are two official printed cards achieved in manuscript, one recording Harold Clark's death in action on 3-3-17 and his place of burial (Warlencourt British Cemetery; Location Mem. Plot Cross No. 6 Row C; Nearest Railway Station or Town Arras), the other recording the death in action on 24-4-18 of [a cousin] Lance Corporal Andrew Douglas Clark, 43rd Battalion A.I.F. and his place of burial (Bonnay Communal Cemetery, Plot 1 Row B Grave 31; Nearest Railway Station or Town Amiens). The presence of these two cards announcing the cousins' death in action, the printing of this memorial piece in Adelaide, rather than Melbourne where Harold's parents lived, and the pristine state of the piece, strongly suggest that Elizabeth Clarke was responsible for the publication and that this copy descends ultimately from her. The front wrapper repeats the title with some additions: Gallipoli 1916 :: France 1917 / Diary of the Late Sergt. H.E. Clark / Late 27th Battalion A.I.F. / Killed in Action in France March 3, 1917. / He Gave His All - His Life. [From auction catalogue.]
