John Barton Hack's first house
Photograph of 'John Barton Hack's first house near Echunga'. A researcher has added: This is by no means Barton Hack's first house in South Australia, nor at Echunga. After a year spent in two Manning cottages by North Terrace he built a stone house and store on acre 74 in Hindley Street. In 1839 he acquired 3000 acres of the Three Brothers Special Survey at Echunga and built Echunga Springs on section 3883 and moved there in 1840. This was the house sketched by Gawler in June 1841. This photo shows one of the two dairies; this one was on Section 3863, and is the site of Stephen Hack's house in 1843 after he and Barton Hack were bankrupted and evicted from Echunga Springs.
