Summary

Carte de visite albumen photograph of early Adelaide photographer Thomas Spicer Adey. The back of the mount bears the imprint of 'Edward Farndell, Photographer (from Kent Town), No. 83 Hindley Street, Adelaide, Late Professor Hall's', together with a contemporary inscription in ink 'Tho. Spicer Adey Aug./69'. A later inscription to lower margin of the front of the mount reads 'Tho. Spicer Adey (Friends)'.

Historical information

Thomas Spicer Adey was known professionally as Spicer Adey (1838-1912). At first glance this photograph would appear to have been taken by his contemporary, Edward Farndell, who at the time employed Adey as an assistant. Adey went on to run his own photographic studio in Adelaide, between 1877 and 1885. However, there remains the distinct possibility that this is in fact a self-portrait.
