[General description] This is probably Miller Anderson's haberdashery department. On one side of the room there are bolts of cloth stacked on shelves against the wall, on the other there are small boxes of things like lace and trimmings. Examples of various goods are displayed hanging high on rails. The two long counters provide a number of chairs for the customers. The firm had refused to leave the premises and the case had gone before the Supreme Court. A sign on the front of the theatre says that an auction was to held on May 6, 1954

[General description] This two storey cottage has a shingle roof and an iron-roofed verandah. It has a picket fence. The property and its surroundings appear to be run down, probably part of a light industrial zone. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 57 / Fenn Place. East side. / October 7,1926. / Site of house: Right side is 44 yards north of Hindley Street. Frontage: 8 1/2 yards.' (Another hand) 'The verandah of this building was removed and the roof covered with iron at a later date. Compare with B 13663 taken in 1956.'

[General description] This is the premises of Goodman Brothers Auto and Service Company with its workshop, driveway and bowsers. A sign prominent on the building announces that it is an 'Automobile Laundry'. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 62 / West Terrace. North corner of Hindley Street / June 24, 1926 / Motor Service Station erected in 1926 on vacant site.'

Campden, West Terrace

Campden, West Terrace, the town house of the late W.H. Gray who arrived in South Australia in February 1837. It is 38 yards south of Hindley Street and stood back about 8 yards from West Terrace. William Henry Gray purchased his allotment of land in Adelaide while still in London. He arrived in the colony in 1837 on board the 'John Renwick' and built rush roofed cottages on North Terrace which were thought to be the first in South Australia. After a harsh beginning he increased his land and grazing acres. He was prominent in civic life.

Bickford's Saddlery, 20 Hindley Street

Bickford's Saddlery was established by Humphrey Harding Bickford following his arrival in South Australia aboard the 'Gratitude' on the 15th August 1848,(see Register 16.8.1848). Humphrey (39) was killed in a riding accident near the Cross Keys on the 30 October 1864, (see Register 31 October 1864). After this his wife Sarah ran the saddlery until 1879. Sarah (74) died at Glenelg on the 7th April 1901, (see Register 8 April 1901). Both were buried in West Terrace Cemetery. For another view, see B 21602.

Signor Francesco Setaro

Signor Francesco Setaro

PORTRAIT: Francesco Setaro, a well known Italian violinist and composer resident in Adelaide in the 1890s. He was conductor and founder of the well-known Setaro's String Band. He was born in Viggianno, Italy in 1868, and came to Australia at the age of 20 as a member of a special band engaged to play at the opening of the Jubilee Exhibition and stayed on. He was the author of several popular compositions including 'Farmyard', 'The Canary Waltz' and 'The Cats' Polka'. Obituary, The Advertiser, 18 January 1926, p13. Formal portrait of of a young woman, identified on the back as Emma Nienaber. Photograph by Edward Farndell, 83 Hindley Street, Adelaide. According to a researcher, this could be Emmie Maria (Emma) Nienaber who was born at sea on 29th March 1849. Her father would have been Heinrich Carl C. Nienaber and her mother Marie (nee Hehne). They settled in South Australia, and it is believed that Emma was involved in the movement to achieve votes for women in South Australia. Emma died on 9th September 1933 at Rose Park, South Australia.
