The statue of Queen Victoria, unveiled 1894, is in the centre of Victoria Square. Fred Herring Monumental Sculptor business is on the northen corner of Grote Street and Victoria Square. His display of headstones and statues is visible. Globe Chambers stands on the southern corner of Grote Street. A row of cottages stand facing the Square on the corner of Angas Street.

Archbishop's residence on West Terrace, north corner of Grote Street, 3 April 1935. Extreme right of building is 13 yards north of Grote Street. Frontage of the main building : 26 1/2 yards. For the building added in 1935 see B 6807. The Catholic Archbishop's Residence was constructed in 1845 for Bishop Francis Murphy who was the foundation Bishop of South Australia. It was designed by George Strickland Kingston. The building was extended in 1880 and refaced with Italianate mouldings. It now has an asymetrical Italianate villa appearance with the original section constructed of brick and stone. The brick fence and cast iron gates are noteworthy.

Photographs collected and taken for a conservation study of older residential buildings and hotels in Adelaide city (not North Adelaide) in 1976-1977, initiated by the Adelaide Residents' Society Inc., which were later used in their 1978 publication 'Preserving Historic Adelaide' edited by Colin Bond and Hamish Ramsay (Rigby Limited). The names of the photographers are not specified, but the following people were involved: Bob Ramsay, Michael Brock, Peter Kelly and Peter O'Grady. (Negatives of their photographs comprise series 4-6 of this group, and may include images from this series.) Some of the early views of buildings have been copied from State Library images (denoted in captions by 'SLSA'). See 'Contents' in 'More info' for details. (The City Acre number or exact location is not specified). Three images not listed in the 'Contents' but included in the book are: (98) Part of Queen Elizabeth I's proclamation of 1560 'agaynst breakyng or defacing of Monuments'; (99) Elevation drawing of St Paul's Cathedral, London by Christopher Wren; (100) Kirribilli House, Sydney.

[General description] The Hub Motors Service Station. The business premises include a large galvanised iron roofed workshop and a smaller shop front. Petrol bowsers stand at the kerb. A sign proclaims 'Cars washed, oiled and greased. While you wait'. The business advertises Morris Cowley and Cleveland cars and Indian and B.S.A. Motor Cycles. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 328 / Brown St., west side / south corner of Grote St., / June 27,1926. / Service Station erected in 1926. For view of the Grote St. frontage see B 3612. For view of the building formerly on site see B 2260. Frontage: 22 yards.' (Another hand) 'For view of this Service Station taken in 1954, see B 13154. Covered way at rear was removed during first half of 1955.' The business was established by Walter Henry Hubbard, Managing Director of Hub Motors Ltd. It was one of five service stations that he owned in the city.

Photographs of W.A. Robjohns

The series comprises 15 albums housing 1,973 photographs, most of which were taken by photographer W.A. Robjohns ca.1920-1966. Album covers were numbered and labelled by Robjohns. The sequence is incomplete, however, as only volumes 1-9, 12-14, 15, 20 and 23 have been donated. Robjohns' brief descriptions of content on the covers and spines are incomplete. For further descriptions of place names and subjects contained in each album, SEE details below. The albums contain small black and white prints, mostly undated, with captions by W.R. Robjohns. Also sepia and postcard prints, and a few hand-tinted prints. A small number of images were taken by other photographers, several of whom have been identified by Robjohns. Images depict Adelaide suburbs, city scenes and country towns, with an emphasis on rural landscapes, parks and reserves, rivers, reservoirs, streets, houses, churches, businesses and shop fronts, and public celebrations and processions. Also included are images of the Robjohns family on picnics and holiday outings, and their homes, cars and pets. A number of photos were duplicated or enlarged by Robjohns and appear in more than one album.

Christian Chapel, Hindmarsh

Christian Chapel (later in 1933 became Church of Christ) on Robert Street (now Orsmond Street) Hindmarsh. Located on the south west side of the street about 20 yards south east of Mary Street. The chapel was erected in 1855 and in 1894 a porch was added to the front. This matched the stone and quoins of the original chapel. On the extreme left was the Sunday School which was erected before the church and belonged to Thomas Magarey. Thomas Magarey endowed chapels in Hindmarsh (1854) and in Grote Street (1856). He was a miller and sheep pastoralist who also was a member of both Upper and Lower Houses. He advocated the teaching of the Bible in public schools.
