Victoria Square
[General description] City buildings, street and parked cars on the west side of Victoria Square. The single storied premises of Piper's Opticians and Albert District Rechabites are soon to be demolished and replaced by the new Rechabites Building. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 267 and 306 / Victoria Square, west side / north of Grote Street / 9th July 1928. / The two single storey buildings were demolished in 1928. See B 5744. Near side of Rechabites building is 51 1/2 yards south of Franklin Street. Far side of Piper's is 65 yards south of Franklin Street'.

Collection of several hundred 3" x 4" glass plates negatives taken around Adelaide by Theo Bachmann ca.1915-1950. Originally housed in labelled sleeves with an index, they feature the Bachmann and Plunket families, as well as more general scenes. The original envelope number is shown in square brackets after the description of each image, and can be cross-referenced to the index (see B 71826/656. Images 101-200 feature family picnics, The Botanic Gardens, views around Belair and Waterfall Gully, and scenes around the suburbs.

Victoria Square, Adelaide
The Victoria Square gardens, surrounded by wrought iron fencing, are viewed through telegraph wires producing an interesting effect. In the foreground cab horses are feeding from nosebags. The National Mutual Life building is seen on the opposite side of the Square in its original position on the corner of Grote Street. In 1979, the facade of this building and its original roof were moved 34 metres north to make way for the SGIC Building. Victoria Square, Adelaide
Victoria Square, Adelaide, west side, on the 9th April, 1925. The car in the foreground is an Austin Tourer owned by E.P. Knofel of Forestville. Victoria Square
Victoria Square looking south west from the east side of the Square at a point a little north of Wakefield Street 1883-86. The Square is seen with two central gardens fenced by railings and a wide road joining Wakefield Street to Grote Street running through the centre. Horse drawn carriages and their drivers are stationary in the north eastern corner of the square nearest to the photographer.

Lonnen and Cope's premises, Adelaide
The premises of Lonnen and Cope, printers and bookbinders, on the west side of Tavistock Street, Adelaide. The left side of Lonnen's is 24 yards north of Rundle Street. The cottages on extreme right were demolished in 1950, and for a view of the building erected on the site of the cottages in 1952 see B 13468. This photo was taken on the 18th June, 1923, soon after the building was completed. (See History note for details of the company).

[General description] A man and two girls pose for the camera next to A. Smyth's stall in the Central Market. The Market is largely deserted so perhaps they are about to set up their stall for opening time. Byron Place, west side, July 28th 1941, the right side of the building on right is 62.5 yards south of Grote Street, the left side is 50 yards north of Gouger Street. The building in the centre was formerly the Sportsman Hotel. For alterations made in 1948 see B 13072.

Eight Hour Day procession
Horse drawn wagon carrying the South Australian Drivers' Association banner in front of the Adelaide High School, Grote Street, Adelaide, prior to taking part in the Eight Hour Day procession. The wagon also carries a sign proclaiming "No peace until we get eight hours'.

[General description] Two three storey city buildings, both designed in the neoclassical style of the late ninetenth century, are seen from the opposite side of the road. Tourer style cars of the era are angle parked at the kerb. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 306 & 267 / Victoria Square, west side / March 17, 1926 / Cantilever verandah erected in 1926 in front of the nearer of the three story buildings. Far side of three story buildings is 60 1/2 yards north of Grote Street. Frontage of three story buildings: 15 yards' (Another hand) 'Cantilever verandah erected in front of three storey building in 1938. Shop fronts installed in both these places between 1926 and 1938.'
