Built 1863 (5) JG Lawrie, Glasgow. Owners T Skinner and Co. registered Glasgow. Wrecked at Warrnambool Victoria January 15, 1888 when she struck while entering in charge of a pilot. Efforts to save the vessel proved useless. She was inward with a cargo of cement for the new breakwater].

The 'Newfield' after being stranded

The steel barque 'Newfield', 1512 tons, after being stranded [possibly also known as the 'Gwydyr Castle']. According to a researcher, the 'Newfield' was built by Alexander Stephen in Dundee & built for Brownells & Co. of Liverpool. 29 Aug 1892 - stranded when Cape Otway light was mistaken for King Island on passage Sharpness - Brisbane with 1850Te salt. 9 crew were lost. The next Newfield ON 102113 was built at the same yard in 1893, presumably as a replacement for the same owner. She was later called Gwydyr Castle and was scrapped in 1932.

According to a researcher, this is a detail from a larger photograph taken by James Taylor on Sept. 27, 1884. The view is from the north shore near the jetty and looking south. The original mount also identifies the ship to the left as the Duresdeop, and the ketch to the right as the Copella.

Wrecked 20 May 1905, Malden Island, South Pacific. Built for the triangular run, outward to Australia with passengers and general cargo, thence to China, probably with coal, then home to England with tea, but actually arrived too late to participate in the tea trades and spent most of her active career in the Australian trades, taking wool cargoes back to UK].
