The iron barque 'Sydenham', 1063 tons, moored in an unidentified port. According to R. Easton 'the photo was taken 29th August 1883 at Gravesend. It ['Sydenham'] was being fitted out prior to leaving for Australia where it arrived on Xmas day' [iron 3 mast barque, 1120 gross, ON63563. 210.1 x 34.1 x 21.0. Built 1870 (1) A Stephen and Son, Glasgow. Owners: JH Luscombe, registered London. Later S Goldberg and Sons, registered Swansea].

The steel barque 'Sunlight', 1433 tons, in an unidentified port. The was the last square-rigger built for a British owner [steel 3 mast barque, 1433 gross, ON124033, 230.9 x 37.2 x 21.0. Built 1907 (1) Napier and Miller Ltd., Glasgow. Owners: Lever Bros. Ltd., registered Liverpool. Captured June 6, 1915, 20 miles SW from Galley Head by a German submarine, and later torpedoed (Claimed to have been the last square rigged sailing ship built for British owners).


The 'Toowoomba' moored at Gravesend, U.K.
The iron barque 'Toowoomba', 585 tons, moored at Gravesend, U.K. [iron 3 mast barque, 585 gross, ON27738, 169.9 x 28.3 x 17.9. Built 1859 (7) Scott and Co. Greenock as 'Jane Henderson' for Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. of Glasgow, for the New Zealand trade. Sold mid 1870s and renamed 'Toowoomba' by Taylor, Bethell and Roberts, registered London, who had a contract to transport migrants to Queensland, hence the new name. In 1880, or thereabouts, was sold to Eastern and South African Telegraph Co., who probably used to ship as a storeship in connection with cable laying operations].

Registered Liverpool, later J. Edgar and Co. On a voyage from New York to London with a cargo of naptha, took fire and blew up on 17 October 1898 off the North Foreland.]

Ltd. Register closed in August 1947 when customs advised the vessel had been holed and beached for use as a breakwater at Yarrabah mission, Mission Bay, near Cairns, North Queensland].
