Summary

The steel barque 'Newfield', 1512 tons, after being stranded [possibly also known as the 'Gwydyr Castle']. According to a researcher, the 'Newfield' was built by Alexander Stephen in Dundee & built for Brownells & Co. of Liverpool. 29 Aug 1892 - stranded when Cape Otway light was mistaken for King Island on passage Sharpness - Brisbane with 1850Te salt. 9 crew were lost. The next Newfield ON 102113 was built at the same yard in 1893, presumably as a replacement for the same owner. She was later called Gwydyr Castle and was scrapped in 1932.

From the volume titled 'British Owned Iron and Steel Barques (II)'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons. Newfield was wrecked in 1892 near Peterborough, Victoria.
