Summary

The iron barque 'Onyx' 420 tons, in an unidentified port [iron 3 mast barque, 420 gross tons. ON51153. 136.6 x 25.8 x 16.5. Built 1864 (11) J Laing, Sunderland. Owners: Robert Weatherley, registered Sunderland, then Robert Sharp: 1881 WR Williams, registered Wellington NZ: 1885 H Guthrie, registered Dunedin: 1908 sold to Union SS Co. of NZ Ltd. for use as a coal hulk at Auckland. Scuttled off Cuvier Island, Oct. 11, 1925].

From the volume titled 'British Owned Iron and Steel Barques (II)'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
