[General description] Sir George Murray gifted ten thousand pounds to the university for this union building to provide men students with quaters including a gymnasium and a library. It is three stories high and built from red brick with concrete dressings including a large coat of arms set into the north face.The cloister joins with the Lady Symon building on the right. Broken Hill: Trades Hall

The foundation stone of the Trades Hall was laid by Ben Tillett, British Trade Union leader, on 5 June 1898. Thomas Jackson was the architect for this building. Construction was completed in 1905. The original foundation stone had been laid by Sir Henry Parkes in April 1891 but strike action swallowed all available funds and building did not commence again until 1898, by which time the original foundation stone was gone.The Trades Hall was the first building in Australia owned by a trades union.

A researcher has provided the following information: 'There are two articles in Trove which provide further information on this image: "This would seem to be the same group: THE DANCE OF THE GREEK MAIDENS. (1927, MAY 14). THE ADVERTISER (ADELAIDE, SA:1889-1931), P. 14. It seems to have been a part of a pageant presented by the University Womens' Union. Pageant of Learning. (1927, May 14). The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA: 1889-1931), p. 14. Photo is one of many taken from the Pageant of Learning presented by the University Women's Union on Friday 13th of May 1927, to raise funds for the furnishing of the Lady Symon building. The pageant was depicting the progress of man through the ages and presented in the University grounds.

Collection of 250 wartime photographs

Papers comprising approximately 250 photographs and contact prints which have been housed in an album. The majority of the images are of Betty Westwood's military experience in the jungles of Brunei and the northern Brunei island of Labuan, and include army camps, local people and army associated personnel, patients and scenery. There are also some earlier photographs of her nursing days in Redbank, Queensland and South Australia at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and a few images of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. Some 65 of the photograph are annotated, indicating names of those in the photographs and location names, these are indicated at item level for this record. See below for further details.
