Summary

The iron barque 'Rothesay Bay', 776 tons, in Hobart [iron 3 mast barque, 775 tons, ON78553, 186.9 x 31.1 x 18.5 Built 1877 (9) Birrell, Stenhouse and Co., Dumbarton. Owners: JS Hatfield, registered Glasgow, later Hatfield, Cameron and Co., c.1910 sold to Norway and renamed 'Activ'. Reverted to original name and was enrolled at Sydney in 1916. Owned by Australian Ship Activ Ltd. Converted into a hulk and register closed October 1921. Sold 1921 to Union SS Co. of NZ Ltd and hulked in Wellington c. 1921, later used at Auckland vide 'Union fleet 1875-1975' by IJ Farquhar, and broken up up in 1936].

One of the ships owned by Hatfield, Cameron and Co., Glasgow.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
