Series 037: Aerial views of locations along the Murray River

Aerial photos of locations along the Murray River, including Murray Bridge, Berri and Renmark, and two general views of the river. Businesses featured in the images include Renmark Fruit Growers Co-operative, Berri Growers Co-operative Distillery Company (later Berri Co-operative Winery, then Berri Estates), Renmark Growers Distillery (later 23rd Street Distillery), and the Berri Co-operative Packing Union Ltd.

Baptist Church, Angaston

Baptist Church, Angaston, congregation arriving in horse and buggies. This church was built in 1854-55 and was used as a larger Union Church after the village of Angaston outgrew the Union Chapel. The building has local bluestone walls with soapstone quoins and surrounds. After a church division in 1861 it was a Baptist Church until 1928. Then it was used to store building supplied before being refurbished and rededicated as a Lutheran Church in 1941.

Proclamation Ceremony of the transfer of the Northern Territory to the Commonwealth of Australia - 2nd January 1911, Mr Mitchell in black. According to a researcher, there is a copy of this photograph on the front verandah of Government House in Darwin. Notes from the back of the photograph say "At the Proclamation ceremony on January 2nd, 1911 at the Residency, Port Darwin. Mr Justice Mitchell read proclamation. Mrs Mitchell hoisted Commonwealth flag under the Union Jack to the accompaniment of "God Save the King". Mr Justice Mitchell gave a patriotic address after which refreshments were served to the public at the Residency. About 500 of whites, Aborigines and Asiatics attended and the function was a great success. The photo is taken during the address. Mrs Mitchell stands on the immediate right of the Judge. The two robed figures in audience are Messrs Kelly and RED Mallam. Mrs N Holtz stands at the right of Mrs Mitchell".

[General description] Various shops and buildings along Moonta's main street are the premises for the Moonta District Co-Operative, (dealers for International, Deering and McCormack harvesters), C.W. Williams' agency for C.A.V. batteries and Farmers Union to name a few. The Town Hall clock tower can be seen in the middle of the view. [On back of photograph] 'Ryan Street / Named after the shepherd who discovered Moonta Mines / 1932 / Note by Mr. O. Pryor: Ryan Street was intended to be the main business street but the shop-keepers preferred George Street / Two storied building in middle distance is the union Bank / Reproduced in Chronicle for September 1st, 1932'.

Archibald Henry Peake

Archibald Henry Peake was Premier of South Australia on three occasions: from 1909-1910 for the Liberal and Democratic Union: from 1912-1915 and from 1917-1920 for the Libreral Union. He was also Treasurer and Attorney General from 1905-1909. He represented Naracoorte in the House of Assembly.

The Peake Ministry. In 1909 Peake formed a ministry filled with Liberal Democratic Union members. Peake himself became Premier, Treasurer and Minister of Education. Following the election win by Labour in 1910 Peake formed the anti-labour parties into the Liberal Union with Peake as the leader. After the 1912 election the Liberals won by an eight seat majority. He regained his offices of premier, treasurer and Minister of Education.

[General derscription] This view is one of three entitled 'A Slack Season' and dated August 31st, 1903. It depicts the east end of Rundle Street on a wet day with horse drawn carts standing at the kerb and moving along the street. A lot of this traffic is associated with the East End Market. The Kent Town Brewery can be see in the distance. Frontage is 14 yards. For additions erected in front of this cottage in 1946 see B 12326. This double fronted cottage has an iron roof and a wall and fence separating it from busy Rundle Street.

East corner of Grenfell and Union Streets, Adelaide, on July 10th, 1925, featuring the premises of Richard Spencer Carriage and Waggon Manufacturing Company. The firm advertises 'Horses, ponies and harness, vehicles of every description' to be bought, sold or exchanged. The extreme left of the photo is 62 yards north of Grenfell Street, and the extreme right is 29 yards east of Union Street. The cottages on the right were demolished in 1926. For the building replacing them, see B 4826. Spencer's premises were demolished in 1936.

Crown and Anchor Hotel, Grenfell Street frontage is 12 yards and Union Street frontage is 19 yards. The Crown and Anchor Hotel existed from 1853 and at the time of this photograph the proprietor was John Bretag. The hotel was built on the site of the original Union Inn Arms Hotel. A large crown and anchor is engraved into the parapet above the front door of the two storey hotel.

The proprietor at the time of the photograph was E George Berk 1881-1892. One of the three men standing near the front door is probably Mr Berk.

The two storey building numbered 36,38 and 40 Waymouth street has nine arches opening on to the street. A parapet with dressings stands over the building on the second storey.

F Kenneth Milne designed many significant Adelaide buildings including the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society building on Waymouth Street (1928). Compare with B 4765. This imposing four storey corner building houses Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society Limited. Woodards House, built in 1928-1929, is an outstanding example of a building constructed in the Inter-War Commercial Palazzo style. It shows the public style of F Kenneth Milne, a prominent South Australian architect, who regarded this building as one of his most important works. Constructed as the South Australian head office of the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society, the building reflects the commercial expansion and consolidation of the capital city centre during the Inter-War period.

This three storey ornate building houses The Norwich Union Fire Office, South Australian Insurance Company Limited, which was established in 1797. It also houses the Mutual Life and Citizens Assurance Company Limited. Bunting is draped around the doorway to the building. The Criterion Hotel stands on the southern side and D Politis offers afternoon tea at Athenaeum, Matters and Company Auctioneers and Estate Managers stands on the northern side.

The three storey building houses the Norwich Union Fire Office, Citizens Life Assurance Company Limited, Calders Agency Hotel Brokers, a firm of electrical and consulting engineers. Next door is Matters and Company, and then stands D Politis and Company, Fish and Oyster Saloon and Restaurant.

Union Bank of Australia, south western corner of Gawler Place, then Freeman Street, and Pirie Street. (Sweet Adelaide 32) The Union Bank was first established in Hobart in 1837. It was an Anglo-Australian bank. The photograph shows the Adelaide branch which was housed in an attractive two storey building with shutters over the windows and an iron railing fence in the front.

Number 66 Pennington Terrace was erected in 1940. Compare with B 1319. The two storey house has rendered walls and quoins at the corners. It has a small balcony above the front door which has shuttered French doors. All the windows have wooden shutters.
