Beltana has important links with the overland telegraph, transcontinental railway, mining, outback services, Australian Inland Mission and Afghan camel history. The original inhabitants were the Kuyani and Adnyamathanha Aboriginal people who camped at the nearby springs

Goolwa to Port Elliot tramway, the first South Australian tramway. Photo taken between 1854, when the line was opened, and 1871, when Jones vacated the position of Traffic Manager. [General description] Town buildings and telegraph poles along Randell Street Mannum. The premises of Gilbert, Tailor can be seen in the centre of the view.

[General description] Under a large gum tree are two boys, one standing, the other lying down and holding the reins of his horse. On the left is the Post Office and Telegraph Station, designed by the Colonial Architect, W. Bennett Hayes, and built in 1866. On the right is the Police Station and Courthouse, dating from 1862. Picket fencing surrounds the buildings and there is what appears to be a wooden stockyard under the tree. Mount Remarkable is seen in the distance. [On back of photograph] 'Melrose or Mount Remarkable when this photo was taken showing Police Station and Post Office. The tree is still there. The boy standing up was named John Croft and if alive today would be over 90 years. Note slate roofs. Police Station has a verandah on it now and old wooden paling fence has been pulled down and a cyclone fence erected otherwise unaltered. Post Office unaltered.'

Post Office and residence at Melrose in the southern Flinders Ranges. This attractive building dates from 1866, the same year as the telegraph line from Melrose to Port Augusta was installed. Melrose was named after George Melrose who arrived in South Australia onboard the "Palmyra" in 1839.

Main Street of the township of Melrose in the 1860's. The Post and Telegraph Office can be seen on the extreme right of the photograph. The North Star Hotel can be seen in the background on Nott Street. The Williams were proprietors of the Hotel at this time. The hotel started trading from a log hut and was upgraded before 1881. The photograph shows a long stone single storey building.

The photograph shows a stone building which housed the Post Office, Telegraph Office, the Commonwealth Bank and the Savings Bank of South Australia. In the left foreground there is a building site with partially laid foundations and stone blocks piled up. The main town buildings are in the mid ground: The two storey building on the left (behind the single storey one with the shingle roof), houses the Post and Telegraph Offices. In the centre is the National Bank of Australasia, and on the right is the Mount Gambier Hotel. Note the hand hewn post and rails fences and the sheep hurdles stacked in the centre. Paddocks with gum trees and a view of the Mount are in the background.

River steamer "Wilcannia" built at Milang in 1876. No copying without permission from the donor. "Wilcannia" was built in 1874 and weighed 144 tons. Her engines were originally from "Telegraph". She was wrecked in 1915 but was still running in 1924. The photograph shows the paddle steamer taking on fire wood on the banks of the river.

House, belonging to Mr. Ross near Alice Springs. John Ross, drover and explorer, was born in Scotland and arrived in Australia in 1837. In 1870 he was employed by Sir Charles Todd to lead an advance party for the establishment of the Overland Telegraph. From journal of William Henry Tietkens: "At Alice Springs I had the pleasure of meeting with a veteran explorer in the person of John Ross, aged 72 years, who is still hale, active and strong. Took a number of photographs of the station and neighbourhood during my stay here."

Police Station, Pine Creek. Pine Creek is located in the Katherine area. It is on the border of land traditionally owned by the Wagiman people, Jawoyn people and the Waray people. It became populated by workers during the gold rush and installation of the Overland Telegraph. The photograph shows a man dressed in white with his dog standing outside the police station which is surrounded by a fenced garden.

Several people are waiting further along the street and horses, carts and carriages can be seen. Smith's Dining Room is offering oyster luncheons.
