Captain Richard Crozier

Portrait of Captain Richard Crozier, RN, taken by T.R. Williams, 236 Regent Street, London. In April 1837 Captain Richard Crozier R.N. aboard the Cruizer-class HMS Victor anchored in the lee of Granite Island, on the return leg of a voyage from India to Australia via Sydney and Adelaide. His journal (PRG 185) records that he named the place 'Victor Harbour'. Crozier rose to the level of Rear-Admiral in the British Navy. He was educated at the Royal Naval College, entering the navy in 1815 aged 12. He married Julia Stone of a wealthy banking family. The front is inscribed 'V. Admiral R. Crozier'; on the back with 'R[ea]r Admiral R. Crozier May 27 1864, V. Admiral 24th April /65'.

The steel barquentine 'Xantippe', 972 tons, in an unidentified port ('Xantippe' = the wife of the Greek philospher Socrates) [steel 4 mast barquentine, not brigantine as captioned. 972 gross, 909 net tons. ON99962. 211.3 x 35.3 x 17.3. Built 1893 (6) Workman, Clark and Co., Belfast. Owners: Montgomerie and Workman, registered Belfast. Went missing late in 1895 on a voyage when in ballast from San Jose, Guatemala towards Vancouver. Sailed Dec. 15, 1895, was spoken Dec. 20 and not seen since]. A researcher believes that Captain George Falconer from Aberdeen, Scotland, was the Captain the year that the 'Xantippe' went missing. The 'Daily Commercial News and Shipping List' (Sydney, Friday 8 February 1895) reports that: 'Captain Falconer, of tho British barquentine Xantippe, from Victoria. B.C. for Cork, which put into Skibbereen Harbor, November 28th, with the crew sick, has since died.' The researcher, a descendant of Captain Falconer, says: 'He snd his crew were caught in the Doldrums. Most succumbed to scurvy. Some were rescued and recovered to Skibbereen in Eire.'

Captain Dickson transferred registration to Brisbane in 1872 and sold vessel August 1877 to Thomas Brooks and John Goodsir, registered Newcastle; May 1882 Thomas Kehoe, registered Sydney, who in turn sold it to William V Brown of Townsville and it was most likely converted into a hulk about the mid 1880s. The registration was closed in 1913 when advice received the vessel had been broken up].

Adelaide Festival of Arts projects

The series consists of photographs, negatives, transparencies and documents relating to proposals, and projects undertaken by Ostoja-Kotkowski, for the Adelaide Festival of Arts. They include sound and image productions, floats, chromasonic towers, festival decorations, and exhibitions. It includes 'Genesis' designed in 1962 which was Ostoja's first attempt to present photographic images synchronised with sound. The 1968 Sound and Image production used a laser beam for the first time. 'Time Riders' was produced for the 1970 festival. Ostoja combined dreamtime legends with poetry by Judith Wright, Roland Robinson, Kenneth Slessor and Max Harris. Painting in abstract style on paper in response to a newspaper subject in the 'Sunday Mail' on 25 February 1961 seen by Ostoja-Kotkowski. The first paragraph reads: 'New Moon Bounce: Scientists here [in Sydney] last night picked up signals bounced off the moon by engineers in England.' On the paper of the painting has been glued collage in the form of diamond-shaped stamped gold foil shapes travelling from one white cut-out figure of a human up to the moon symbol in the centre and back to another cut out figure. Signed 'Ostoja' at bottom right.
