Captain Sturt's Expedition, south corner of Currie and King William Streets departure on August 10th, 1844. From an original water colour drawing in the National Gallery. A comparison with B7861 which purports to be a sketch of the same occasion shows certain differences in the buildings on Acres 78 and 108. On the extreme right is shown a boat taken on the expedition. The drawing is the scene looking north east from the south corner of Currie and King William Street towards the northern corner of Grenfell and King William Streets.

Grenfell Street, east end, after the fire at Burford's Soap factory. WH Burford and Son were soap and candle makers. The factory was on the corner of Grenfell Street and East Terrace. Residents complained about the smell from the soapworks and Peacock's Tannery. A fire which started in the adjoining timber yard destroyed the factory. Another was built in Sturt Street. A researcher notes that there was also a fire at Burford's Adam Street, Hindmarsh site in 1907.

Angas Street, Adelaide, on the east corner of Queen Street: a house thought to have been used by either Colonel Light or Captain Sturt as a city office which was transferred from its original site on the corner of Hindley and Morphett Streets. Old shingle roof replaced by iron. Demolished between 1918 and 1923.

[General description] Four children are posing in front of the door of the new Freeman Ltd. Joinery Works building. The brick building has a classic saw-tooth roof profile often used in factories. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 471 / North end of Arthur Court / April 18, 1926 / Freeman's premises were erected in 1925 on a vacant site. The southern front of the building is shown here in part. It measures 53 yards and is 76 yards north of Sturt Street.'

[General description] This small cottage, set back off the street appears to be squeezed between brick walls on either side. There is a small garden containing a couple of old fruit trees and (possibly) some tomato plants. King's Head Hotel, north corner of King William Street and Sturt Street, August 29th 1941. King William Street frontage is 28.5 yards. For a view of the unbalconied building on the extreme right of the photograph before the alterations which were finished in 1949 see B 12437. From 1934 the Vaughton family ran a hotel next to the King's Head Hotel. The proprietors were Ellen, Rowland Robert, Rowland William, Veronica, Brian. The hotel existed from 1848 and was listed on the National Trust list as Item Number 1152.
