A philanthropist, he built the Jubilee Homes, better known as David Bower Cottages on Bower Road, in Semaphore Park to house distressed seamen. He became known as "the father of Port Adelaide". In this photograph he is wearing a square shaped chin strap beard.

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Thomas R. Bowman in three quarter view. He was one of four brothers who came to South Australia in 1838 after a few years in Tasmania. With his brothers he was a pioneering pastoralist aquiring properties in the Dry Creek area, later in the mid north at Werocata, Crystal Brook and Martindale. They were reputedly very hard workers, doing much of the station work themselves. Thomas was at the Crystal Brook run for twenty years. He was a generous philanthropist giving large donations to charities in the year before his death.

Born in Adelaide in 1838 he attended the Collegiate School of S.t Peter and then had further training in law. He was admitted to practice in 1860 and later had a distinguished parliamentary career, serving at times as attorney general and treasurer. He arrived at Holdfast Bay in the Tam O'Shanter in November 1836, initially going into business in a butcher's shop with his brother Henry. Later, they made a fortune in copper mining with Thomas going on to be a prominent Adelaide businessman and landowner, owning property in Rundle and King William Streets. After his death three fifths of his estate (a sum of approximately 150,000 pounds) was bequeathed to the hospitals. Dr Millner and Family. This arrangement of five portraits depicts Dr James Stokes Millner, his wife Elizabeth, son William and two daughters Esther and Grace. Dr Millner is heavily bearded and has thinning hair. Mrs Millner has her long dark hair arranged in a bun adorned with a flower. Their young son is standing with his elbow on a desk and he is possibly ten years old. The two daughters are possibly thirteen and fifteen years old and have ringlets in their dark hair.

He arrived in the colony in 1839 in the Palmyra, built a successful distillery business and later served in both the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament. He was influential in the Crown Lands Department and the Overland and other telegraph lines, and appointed KB in 1876. He was active on several boards and a volunteer as a captain in the mounted and foot forces.

[General description] This is a head and shoulders portrait of Eustace Reverley Mitford, taken in later life. He is wearing a light coloured shirt and jacket with a thin bow tie and has a neat moustache. A great-nephew of John Freeman Mitford, first Baron Redesdale he migrated to South Australia in 1839, bought eighty acres and farmed near the Sturt River. He did not prosper in business but in 1867 started a weekly satirical journal, Pasquin: Pastoral, Mineral and Agricultural Advocate in which he lampooned many aspects of colonial life and championed the underdog. Arriving in Adelaide in the 'Glenelg' in 1849 he first worked on land near the River Murray. Later, after a successful stint in the Victorian goldfields, he returned to Adelaide where he became a successful businessman and merchant, then went into politics. He was a strong advocate for the Federation of Australian States. He bought 'Netherby' in 1867, and died in 1883 [On back of photograph] 'Sir William Morgan'.
