Worked on a cattle property near Angaston, then set up a shipping business in Port Adelaide. He was a committee member of SA Railway Company, Chamber of Commerce, Burra Burra Mine. He was a founder of SA Gas Company. He was elected to the Legislative Council and owned the property of Woodside House. The photograph is copied from glass portrait donated by Miss Alice E Hall of Frome House, North Terrace.

Born Eliza Oliver, she married William Harcus, Congregational Minister, in Newport, England, in 1848. They emmigrated to Australia and arrived in Adelaide in the early 1860s.
