Sir Robert Dalrymple Ross
[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Sir Robert Dalrymple Ross. He has greying hair, beard and moustache and is facing left. He was an army officer, amateur horticulturalist and Member of the House of Assembly. He actively supported schemes to lay cable from England to Australia and for a transcontinental railway from Adelaide to Darwin. He was an enthusiastic advocate for South Australia's wine industry. Described as a 'model colonist' he was knighted in 1886 for his many achievements.

A researcher provided the following information: Cain Rumbelow would have been named after his uncle, Cain Jelliff, the husband of Alice Rumbelow, who died in 1877, eight months before Cain Rumbelow was born.

The portrait shows an old man dressed in black, including a black brimmed hat and sporting a white beard. He is seated in front of a seascape backdrop and is holding a walking stick.

James Shaw (1815-1881) South Australian artist. This is a photograph copied from a portrait painted in Adelaide in approximately 1875. "The Drifting Wreck" can be seen hanging on the wall" . Shaw moved to Adelaide in 1850 with his wife Janet Liddle Peterson. He was a Scottish painter, photographer, engraver, lithographer, surveyor and lawyer

John Banks Shepherdson and Marianne Shepherdson
Daguerreotype portrait of John Banks Shepherdson with his first wife, Marianne (R), nee Craike, and an unidentified daughter (L). The girl is wearing a long dress with lacy drawers visible underneath, and wide lace cuffs at the ends of her three-quarter length sleeves. In one hand she is holding a small posy. John Shepherdson is wearing checked trousers with a vest and jacket and cravat, while his wife is wearing a lace bonnet and holding a posy of flowers in one hand. There is some colour tinting on the flowers and the ring on Marianne's left hand. Married on 6 January 1829 in Yorkshire, John and Marianne (also spelt Mary Anne) with 4 of their children arrived in South Australia aboard the Hartley on 20 October 1837. Marianne died on 29 December 1858 and is buried in the Mount Barker Cemetery. John is buried with his second wife, Sarah, in the Wallaroo Cemetery. John Banks Shepherdson opened a school in the Adelaide Parklands, became a magistrate, organist and lay preacher for the Anglican Church, farmer, postmaster and public servant.
Millicent Clara Short
[General description] Seated portrait of Millicent Clara Short, nee Phillips, wife of Bishop Augustus Short, wearing a voluminous skirt and shawl. She was Chairperson of a group of women including Mary Colton and Emily Clark who, in 1862, lobbied the government for funding a home for female servants who were temporarily unemployed or convalescing from illness. The home opened later that year and accommodated hundreds of women every year up until its closure c. 1895.

Sir Edwin Thomas Smith
{General description] Head and shoulders portrait of the subject in three quarter view, wearing a full, neatly trimmed beard. He was a successful businessman, parliamentarian and philanthropist, knighted (KCMG) in 1888. After his death his house, the 'Acacias' on the corner of Portrush and Kensington Roads Marryattville, became Loreto Convent, later Loreto College. Sir Edwin Thomas Smith
[General description] Head and upper body portrait of Sir Edwin Thomas Smith in three quarter view. He was a successful businessman and brewer who took part in municipal government and served as Mayor of Kensington and Norwood, later Mayor of Adelaide. Later in 1872 he entered the House of Assembly as the Member for East Torrens in which role he served until 1893, then he went to the Legislative Council as the Member for Southern Districts from 1894 until 1902. He was appointed KCMG in 1888.
Sir Edwin Thomas Smith
[General description] Portrait of Edwin Thomas Smith, Esq., M.P. as Mayor of Adelaide, wearing the fur trimmed robes and chain and seal of office. He served as Mayor of Kensington and Norwood, 1897-73 and had two stints of Mayor of Adelaide from 1879-81 and 1886-87. In this time he did much to improve Adelaide's parks and gardens. He was a successful brewer and businessman, and a popular M.P., also a generous benefactor who was appointed K.C.M.G. in 1888.
Mrs James Smith
[General description] This is a full length portrait of Mrs James (Christina) Smith, standing at a slight angle to the camera and resting one hand on a shelf. A Scottish Presbyterian missionary and teacher she did much work with the Booandik Aboriginies, eventually, in 1865, realising her dream of opening a school and home for local Aboriginal children in Mount Gambier. She wrote a treatise entitled 'The Booandik Tribe of South Australian Aborigines' recording the tribe's rites, songs and language and including biographies of converts.

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Robert Barr Smith in seven eighths view. He was sole partner with Thomas Elder in the well known Adelaide firm Elder Smith & Co. and was director and shareholder of several pastoral, mining, Insurance companies and banks as well as the South Australian Company. He was an active philanthropist, giving large amounts to public institutions. He was greatly repected by all and is said to have refused a knighthood.
