Historical information

Information from a researcher: 'Wolryche was the third son of Right Hon. Sir Edward Ryan and Louisa Whitmore. He was born 2 March 1821 and christened at Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, England, 8 June 1821. I understand that he spent a few years in India before coming to Australia, but I do not know when he arrived here (although possibly between 1847-1850). Wolryche married Mary Stevens at St John's Church in Adelaide on 19 May 1851. They had ten children with the first two, Mary Emma and Louisa Alice, being born in Adelaide and the other eight in Tasmania. The birth notice in the Adelaide papers for Mary Emma state that she was born at Garden Lodge, Unley, which was also the name of Wolryche's father, Sir Edward Ryan's home in Kensington, London'.

'Their children were: Mary Emma (born 2 February 1852), Louisa Alice (15 July 1853-1884), Ellen Alma (1855-1950), Ada (born 1857), Eva Whitmore (1857-1929), Frances Florence (born ca.1859), Maude May (born 9 February 1861), Edward Robert Stevens (born 9 August 1862), Cecilia Norah (11 September 1864-16 March 1951), Charles Wolryche Cavendish (born 25 October 1866)'.

'Wolryche's mother, Louisa Whitmore, was the daughter of William Whitmore, Esq, a former sailor, business man and second son of Charles Whitmore, Esq of Southampton. He inherited in 1774, at the decease of Lieutenant-Colonel Weld, the estate of Dudmaston in the county of Salop. William's son, William (Louisa's brother), on inheriting Dudmaston at the death of his father added Wolryche, the name of the historic owners of Dudmaston, to his own surname to produce the double-barrelled name by which he became generally known. Five years later William Wolryche-Whitmore took up the family's parliamentary seat. One of his major concerns was providing new opportunities for working-class people through emigration, and he strongly opposed the use of convict and slave labour everywhere. Wolryche-Whitmore introduced the South Australian Colonisation Act 1834 to the House of Commons, and Whitmore Square in Adelaide is named after him. His last parliamentary contribution was on the subject of emigration to South Australia. In 1810 he married Lady Lucy Bridgeman, daughter of the Earl of Bradford.
