Ragless Brothers

Ragless Brothers

Portrait of seven of the Ragless Brothers who had Yalpara station (north east of Orroroo), and later, Witchelina Station. Witchelina Station was a pastoralist lease for sheep and cattle 72 kilometres north west of Leight Creek and 664 kilometres from Adelaide. John Ragless established the property in 1873. The traditional owners are the Adnyamathanha and Arabunna peoples. The photograph shows Fred. B, William, Hurtle, Thomas, Henry, George and Richard Ragless wearing beards and hats with their three dogs.

Portrait of George Ragless Senior arrived in South Australia in June 1838 with his father John and seven brothers and three sisters on board the ship "Eden". Father John Ragless lived at Pine Forest (Enfield). Son George was a cattle and sheep farmer at Willochra and later lived at "Battersea Park" at Edwardstown after trying his luck during the gold rush. George was married at Gawler Plains on December 30, 1857 by Rev. Thomas Lloyd. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1907. George Ragless died at his home in Edwardstown in 1909

Richard Ragless

Portrait of Richard Ragless. The19 year old arrived in South Australia June 1838 by the "Eden" and was a farmer at "Tonsley Park". He arrived in South Australia with his father John and seven brothers and three sisters. Richard, his father and brother John junior trialled one of the first South Australian manufactured strippers designed for reaping crops. In 1860 Richard and his wife Eliza established the Willochra Inn situated between Port Augusta and Blinman. Richard purchased Harry Watts' property at Tonsley in 1868 and over the years bought neighbouring properties yielding over 500 acres He planted over 2000 gums. The property was used for ploughing matches and picnics. Richard Ragless died at Tonsley in 1901

David Randall

Portrait of David Randall of "Glen Para" or "Glenparra", near Mt. Crawford. The name for the property was suggested by George Fife Angas who advised the Randall family on immigrating to South Australia. David and his wife Eliza arrived in South Australian onboard the 'Templar' in 1845, with their two children, groom, gardener and 2 maids. A single storey stone house was built for him in 1851 and in 1855 he established a dairy and cattle farm and a vineyard on the property near Mount Crawford.

Portrait of Mrs. Eliza D. Randall, wife of David Randall of "Glen Para" or "Glenparra", near Mt. Crawford. Portrait of Capt. William Richard Randell. He was an Australian politician and a pioneer of the riverboat industry on the River Murray and represented the electorate of Gumeracha in the House of Assembly from 1893-1899.

Dr. John Rankine

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of pioneer Dr. John Rankine in an oval frame. The photograph was taken not long before his leaving South Australia to return to Scotland as his health was failing. He and his brothers arrived from Scotland in 1839 and founded the township of Strathalbyn in the 1840s. He bought up grazing land on Hindmarsh Island and built a large house there. He was a Member of Parliament from July 1854 to April 1857 for the seat of Hindmarsh.

These awards were given to reward and highlight good works by members of the British Empire.

Portrait of Geoffrey Sandford Reed, Judge of the Supreme Court. He was involved in security, especially in the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation. At the end of this post he received warm tributes from Prime Minister Robert Menzies. Reed returned to the Supreme Court of South Australia. Twice he acted as Governor of South Australia. [General description] Two silhouette portraits of John and Mary Ridley, who arrived in South Australia in the 'Warrior' in 1839. John was a miller and successful wheat grower who invented the famous wheat reaping machine which became known as 'Ridley's stripper'. [Genral description] Full length portrait of John Riddoch who emigrated from Scotland in 1852 and made money at the River Owens goldfields, subsequently became, along with his brother George a wealthy pastoralist, later politician. He bought Yallum Park estate in 1861 and built a large Italianate mansion where he entertained a variety of famous people including royalty. He was the first to recognise the famous terra rossa soul of the Conawarra winegrowing district.

He wears a wing collar, cravat and single breasted jacket. He was Governor of South Australia from 1883-89, also served three terms as Governor of Western Australia. He was promoted G.C.M.G. in 1887.

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Sir William Cleaver Francis Robinson, Governor of South Australia in 1883-1889 during which time he was president of the Commission which organised the successful Adelaide Jubilee International Exhibition of 1887. A passionate musician and composer he instituted the Bachelor of Music course at the Adelaide University. He was appointed K.C.M.G. in 1877 and G.C.M.G. in 1887.

He was Major and commanding officer of 18th Regiment Irish in South Australia.

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Richard Sanders Rogers M.A., M.D. in three quarters view. He was a distinguished physician, specialising in mental health and using hypnosis, was an army medical officer in the South African War and from 1914-19 with the rank of lieutenant-colonel he directed Keswick Base Hospital. He was also an orchid enthusiast, becoming a world authority on Australian orchids.

John Ross (1817-1903), born in Scotland, arrived in Sydney 1837, undertook the first cattle drive from Goulburn River to Adelaide. He led the exploration for the route of the Overland Telegraph Line

Daguerreotype portrait of John and Rebecca Ross with their three children. Housed in an elaborately decorated embossed leather case with a gilt metal frame. Rebecca was Rebecca McKinlay Affleck and she died in 1869. John Ross remarried to Georgina Strongitharm and they had two daughters. His son, Alexander accompanied him in 1874 and was also a member of the successful Giles expedition in 1875-76. The children in this photograph which was taken in 1856 at Stanley Flat near Clare are Sarah (born 1853), Rebecca (born 1854), and Henrietta (born 1855) John Ross led the survey team whose task it was to find a route for the Overland Telegraph to Port Darwin in 1870.
