Dr Millner and Family. This arrangement of five portraits depicts Dr James Stokes Millner, his wife Elizabeth, son William and two daughters Esther and Grace. Dr Millner is heavily bearded and has thinning hair. Mrs Millner has her long dark hair arranged in a bun adorned with a flower. Their young son is standing with his elbow on a desk and he is possibly ten years old. The two daughters are possibly thirteen and fifteen years old and have ringlets in their dark hair.

[General description] Upper body portrait of pioneer Sir William Milne. He arrived in the colony in 1839 in the Palmyra, built a successful distillery business and later served in both the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament. He was influential in the Crown Lands Department and the Overland and other telegraph lines, and appointed KB in 1876. He was active on several boards and a volunteer as a captain in the mounted and foot forces.

He was the first Supreme Court Judge to the Northern Territory, serving from 1911-1912, also a member of the N.T House of Assembly and later, Attorney General. He is clean-shaven and wears a jacket and waistcoat with a collar and tie. Scholar, philosopher, educationist and administrator he was the Vice Chancellor of Adelaide University from 1916-1942 when he became Chancellor and served in that position until 1948. [General description] This is a head and shoulders portrait of Eustace Reverley Mitford, taken in later life. He is wearing a light coloured shirt and jacket with a thin bow tie and has a neat moustache. A great-nephew of John Freeman Mitford, first Baron Redesdale he migrated to South Australia in 1839, bought eighty acres and farmed near the Sturt River. He did not prosper in business but in 1867 started a weekly satirical journal, Pasquin: Pastoral, Mineral and Agricultural Advocate in which he lampooned many aspects of colonial life and championed the underdog. [General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Sir William Morgan. He is wearing 'mutton chop' whiskers and a moustache, with no beard. Arriving in Adelaide in the 'Glenelg' in 1849 he first worked on land near the River Murray. Later, after a successful stint in the Victorian goldfields, he returned to Adelaide where he became a successful businessman and merchant, then went into politics. He was a strong advocate for the Federation of Australian States. He bought 'Netherby' in 1867, and died in 1883 [On back of photograph] 'Sir William Morgan'.

A distinguished and long serving public servant he became a recognised authority on Parliamentary procedure, starting his career in 1873 as Parliamentary Librarian, then Clerk of the House of Assembly, later Clerk of Parliaments.

[General description] Full length portrait of a dapper Mowbray W. Morris wearing a military style uniform. He was a journalist, contributing to the Register's 'Geoffrey Crabthorne' column in the 1870s. He penned a popular poem 'A Voice from the Bush' which was published anonymously in the column in 1871. Later he became a London magazine editor.

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait in three quarter view of Alexander Borthwick Murray. He emigrated from Scotland, arriving at Holdfast Bay in the 'Lady Lillford' in 1839. Being an experienced sheepman he eventually became a prominent pastoralist, mainly breeding fine Merino sheep. He was a long-term parliamentarian serving in the Houses of Assembly and Legislative Council from 1862 through to 1888 when he retired to his home 'Murray Park' at Magill.

[General description] Portrait of Rebecca Maria Murray, nee Godfrey, and her husband David Murray. Mr Murray is standing and resting his hand on the back of his seated wife's chair. With his brother William he started a retail drapery store in King William Street, which became the wholesale drapery D & W Murray, later the prominent Adelaide firm of Goode, Durrant & Murray. He was an MP in both houses and an avid art collector.

He was born in Staffordshire, England and migrated with his family to Encounter Bay in 1839. He was a pastoralist, conservationist, author and politician who from 1881-87 sat in the House of Assembly as a member for Encounter Bay. He was treasurer in the Downer ministry from June 1885 to June 1886.

[General description] This is a head and shoulders portrait of Doctor George Nott. His curly hair has been smoothed down and he wears a trimmed beard. Originally a physician and surgeon Doctor Nott became interested in writing. He went on to become the first editor of the Bunyip newspaper and a popular prominent citizen belonging to many local organizations including Gawler Institute and the Humbug Society. He was Mayor of Gawler in 1865. He wrote 'The rise and Progress of Gawler', Gawlers first published history. He migrated to South Australia in 1878 and was a Medical practitioner in Adelaide, Member of the Adelaide Hospital Board and the Council of the State Children's Department. A compassionate and energetic man he was involved in the Catholic Church's institutions which cared for orphans, the sick and unfortunate. He was drowned in a boating accident at Goolwa.
