Thomas Johnston

Captain Thomas Johnston' s obituary can be found in The Register 28th August, 1889. He was a seafaring man from Scotland and arrived in South Australia in 1853. He returned later as a member of the crew onboard the steamer 'Lady Emma' which brought the 'Albury' and 'Gundagai' in sections from Scotland. He was owner and captain of the steamer 'Jolly Miller' in Goolwa which was the first iron steamer built in South Australia from raw materials. In 1869 the 'Jolly Miller' was impounded by Customs Officers for carrying illegal goods.

Walter Lindsay Johnston Government Statistician and Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages August 1929. He was the son of Andrew Johnston. Born September 15, 1869 at Kadina. He was educated at Norwood Public School and Caterer's Commercial College. Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. Entered SA Civil Service November 24, 1884. Served in Marine and Customs Dept., Chief Secretary's Office for 16 years (often acting as secretary and shorthand reporter to Royal Commission and select committees. Assisted Government Statistician Nov. 1, 1904. Government Statistician July 1, 1916. Registrar General of Births, Deaths and Marriages August 5, 1928. He married Emily Marion, eldest daughter of Charles Scrymgour on October 24, 1894. She died in 1914. They had one son and two daughters. Recreation: gardening, reading and bowls. Address: 1 Cedar Avenue, Millswood.

Paul Joseph. Possibly the Rev Paul Joseph a young congregational minister who started to erect a new city temple which was proposed for religious activists. He was the former pastor of the Hindmarsh Congreational Church. After not receiving an expected inheritance the young man enlisted as a private in the Australian Expeditionary Force for service abroad in August 1916. The site for the temple was possibly the residence of the late Sir Samuel Way (Montefiore).

August Ludwig Christian Kavel (1798-1860) was a born leader and Lutheran pastor born in Berlin. Kavel heard of George Fife Angas and went to England. Angas advanced money to enable Kavel and two hundred of his congregation to live in Adelaide. They arrived in 1838 and leased land which became Klemzig, named after on of Kavel's German parishes. They expanded to land in Hahndorf and later to the Barossa Valley.

Dean Kennedy at St Laurence's Church in North Adelaide.The congregation were told how he performed missionary work at the Kadina mission, edited the "The Catholic Monthly", he wanted the young and old to have the opportunity to read, he planned to build a presbytery and a boy's school, a new convent for the Sisters of St Joseph and the erection of the beautiful Dominican Priory Chapel

Bishop George Wyndham Kennion (1845-1922) was Anglican Bishop of Adelaide for 12 years. During this time many churches were built, the clergy numbers increased from 50 to 75 and progress was made in the building of the cathedral.
