Historical information

Padre Kendrew was the first Minister nominated as a chaplain to the CMF and took up his appointment in 1901. In 1914 the Methodist Church in Australia was asked to nominate a chaplain and although 55 years old he was selected. He embarked from Melbourne on the troopship 'Themistocles' in December 1914, joining the 16th Battalion in Egypt. He was invalided home in 1916. Returning to South Australia he took an active interest in the new RSL; was the first League representative on the Repatriation Board; was secretary at Bute sub branch from 1922-25; then transferred to Gladstone. Failing health forced him to partially retired from the Ministry but continued to play a role on the Violet Memory Day Committee, the Soldiers' Home League, the TB Aid Society, trustee of the Angorichina Hostel, and the AIF Cemetery Trust. [See 33rd Annual Report of the RSL, South Australian Branch, 1949, page 28.] An obituary appeared in 'The Advertiser', Thursday 10 November 1949, page 3.
