Shirley Williams Jeffries
Shirley Williams Jeffries, son of Rev. William Jeffries was born February 28, 1886 at Lancashire, England. He was educated at Prince Alfred College and the University of Adelaide. He was admitted to the South Australian Bar in 1910. Later he was elected to the House of Assembly as Liberal Federation member for North Adelaide. He was Attorney General, Minister of Education, Minister of Industry and Employment. He introduced legislation for separate Boards for the Public Library, Museum and Art Gallery. Whilst in Parliament he had cancer of the vocal cords but taught himself to speak again. He was knighted in 1953.

Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, Governor of South Australia from 1877-1883. Jervois arrived in the colony during a political crisis. However he appointed James Boucaut as Premier and averted the dissolution of Parliament. He laid the foundation stones at the University of Adelaide, the new Institute and Art Gallery and commissioned the vice-regal summer residence at Marble Hill.

Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, the 10th Governor of South Australia from 1877 - 1883. He arrived in South Australia from Melbourne on board the HMS Sapphire during a political crisis. His term of office coincided with unusually heavy rainfalls which allowed a massive agricultural expansion diring his time. He received numerous honours for his military and diplomatic service.

Gerhardt Johannsen was employed to help build stockyards and encourage gardening. His wife Tillie taught sewing and handcrafts. They lived at Hermannsburg for two years


Frederick Johns
Frederick Johns (1868-1932), leader of the Hansard staff of South Australia 1922. He was baptised Frederick. During the war 1914-1918 he altered this to Frederic. Always spoken of as Fred Johns. He founded the Fred Johns Scholarship for Biography at the University of Adelaide.

William Francis Johns
William Francis Johns joined the Police Force in 1906 and served in the Northern Territory as a Mounted Constable until 1915. He was known as Mulga Bill. He served with the 9th Light Horse Regiment in the 1st AIF. He rose through the ranks of the Police Force and was appointed Commissioner of Police in South Australia in 1944. He was awarded The Order of the British Empire in 1946. He was a founding member of the Epworth Freemason's Lodge and also an alderman in St Peter's Council for more than 17 years

George Bain Johnston
Captain George Bain Johnston was born in Scotland and sailed out to Melbourne in 1853. Later he joined the gold rush at Forest Creek. He moved to Goolwa and in 1857 purchased land in Little Scotland, Goolwa. He built Cockenzie House. He was regarded as one of the Murray's most successful navigators, a loyal, intelligent and enterprising colonist.

Thomas Johnston
Captain Thomas Johnston' s obituary can be found in The Register 28th August, 1889. He was a seafaring man from Scotland and arrived in South Australia in 1853. He returned later as a member of the crew onboard the steamer 'Lady Emma' which brought the 'Albury' and 'Gundagai' in sections from Scotland. He was owner and captain of the steamer 'Jolly Miller' in Goolwa which was the first iron steamer built in South Australia from raw materials. In 1869 the 'Jolly Miller' was impounded by Customs Officers for carrying illegal goods.

Walter Lindsay Johnston
Walter Lindsay Johnston Government Statistician and Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages August 1929. He was the son of Andrew Johnston. Born September 15, 1869 at Kadina. He was educated at Norwood Public School and Caterer's Commercial College. Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. Entered SA Civil Service November 24, 1884. Served in Marine and Customs Dept., Chief Secretary's Office for 16 years (often acting as secretary and shorthand reporter to Royal Commission and select committees. Assisted Government Statistician Nov. 1, 1904. Government Statistician July 1, 1916. Registrar General of Births, Deaths and Marriages August 5, 1928. He married Emily Marion, eldest daughter of Charles Scrymgour on October 24, 1894. She died in 1914. They had one son and two daughters. Recreation: gardening, reading and bowls.
