Reginald Charles (Rex) Ingamells

Reginald Charles (Rex) Ingamells, South Australian poet, was born at Orroroo January 19, 1913, son of Rev. EM Ingamells. He was educated at various public schools and later at Prince Alfred College. He obtained his Batchelor of Arts degree in 1934 and won the Bundey Prize for English verse in 1935. He wrote 'Gum Tops' published in Adelaide in 1935. He was fascinated by Aboriginal culture and founded the Jindyworobak Movement. He died an untimely death in a car crash near Dimboola in 1955.

John Alexander Jackson, Colonial Treasurer, banker, farmer, newspaper editor, public servant. He was appointed Colonial Treasurer and Accountant General 25 September, 1839. (SA Gazette. 26.9.39. 5a) He held this office until his appointment on 16 October 1841 as Colonial Secretary (SA Gazette 21.10.41. 2a) He was invited to take the position of Colonial Treasurer. At the same time he became Local Director of Bank of Australasia. He was reprimanded and left to became Colonial Secretary.

Peleg Whitford Jackson, river steamer captain. He was born in Vermont, America in approximately 1834 and died April 24, 1912. He was known as a transportation entrepreneur. He captained "Settler" in 1862 and 1863, and "Lady Daly" in 1865. He also was involved in the Victorian Coach Company and the South Australian branch of Cobb and Co. He was declared bankrupt in 1870 and was married to Anna Chambers with six children. See B 15993 for the family of Anna Chambers

Richard Jagoe

Richard Jagoe

Richard Jagoe, shipping reporter, quarantine officer and launch fleet operator was born in Cornwall in 1833. He died at his residence 'Rhiador,' 68 Esplanade, Semaphore in 1899. He was good natured and a friendly gentleman. He was also a health inspector for the Department of Health, Inspector of Fish, Justice of the Peace. He could trace his family back to Jahn de Trejago in the time of Edward VI. He was proprietor of a fleet of beach boats which he had adapted by his own design to ferry goods, passengers and news from boats in the Semaphore Anchorage. He was known as the 'Sandhill Savage' because he originally lived among the sand dunes and could clearly see approaching ships carrying the latest news which he would speedily exchange for local news.
