Barrier Hotel, Port Pirie. The Institute Building can be seen next to the hotel. The Barrier Hotel was also known as Barrier Club and existed from 1892. F Leveringston was proprietor at this time. This three storey stone building has verandahs on the second and third floors. A cupola is attached to the third floor on the left hand side of the building.

Central Hotel, Port Pirie on the corner of Florence Street and Jubilee Place was built in 1883 and has been partly demolished but still balances the streetscape of the Jubilee Hotel to the east. The proprietor of the two storey stone hotel at the time of this photograph was CW Trapmann

[General description] The "S.S. Euro" at low tide in Port Pirie. This was the first overseas steam vessel to enter the harbour at Port Pirie. The vessel has two masts and a funnel. [On back of photograph] S.S. Euro at Port Pirie (First overseas steam vessel to enter the Port) January 1875. [The ship was launched 18 June 1874 by A.Stephen & Sons,Glasgow, for Captain William Osborne, Adelaide. Wrecked August 14, 1881 at North Creana Bay, South Australia.]

Railway Station, Port Pirie. The Government decided to open a line to serve the wheat growing areas inland. Port Pirie was a small port with a dredged channel to vessels could come alongside the wharves. The Port Pirie Station was in use from 1876 when a trial trip was made to Crystal Brook and back. The photograph shows two weatherboard buildings next to the railway track. An engine is pulling one carriage and the guards van.

Port Pirie Smelters

Port Pirie Smelter was built in 1889 to treat the Broken Hill ore. The first load of ore arrived by road. In 1931 the Softener Furnace brought into service the new Continuous Refinery. This was completed in 1934. By this time Port Pirie had become the biggest lead smelter in the world. It processed lead and zinc from Broken Hill.

Port Pirie Institute

Port Pirie Institute. This building existed from approximately 1876 when it housed the office and council chamber of the Corporate Town of Port Pirie. The council purchased the buildings of the Institute Committee in 1932 and reopened the former Institute as the new Port Pirie Town Hall and Municipal Offices. The Library was housed in a new building built next door. The Town Hall was demolished after the 1960's and another government building replaced it

Tide gauge at Port Pirie

Tide gauge at Port Pirie reveals that the sea level is rising but much slower than estimated. The Port Pirie gauge has been operational since 1883. High and low tides have been recorded since then. Digital records for Port Pirie began in 1917 with a Negretti and Zambra chart recorder. The site is well protected from wave action however southerly winds drive water to the shallow northern tip of Spencer Gulf
