The majority were created in South Australia and document the landscape and his activities as Reverend. Items include images of the following areas; Mid North and Flinders Ranges, Eyre Peninsula (including Cowell, Franklin Harbour, Hissey's Creek, Coonarie Falls, Winnowing, Arno Bay, Port Lincoln), Adelaide Botanic and Zoological Gardens, Port Elliot and Hindmarsh River, Beetaloo Reservoir, Bundaleer, Prince Alfred College, Mount Gambier, River Murray, Mannum and Renmark. There are also many family portraits, mainly taken during the mission years in northern South Australia. James Weston, wife & child

James Weston, wife & child

Photograph of a watercolour showing a family group identified on the back of the photograph as being painted at Port Arthur, Tasmania in about 1835. This dating of the painting is problematic because James Weston and Miriam Peacock married in Adelaide, South Australia in 1841 when Miriam was about 20 years old. She had arrived in South Australia with her parents and siblings on board the ship the Glenalvon from London in December 1838. If it is the Weston family it dates from the mid-1840s. In 1859 advertisements in the Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser James Weston is described as 'consulting surgeon ... late of Adelaide, (formerly Assistant Colonial Surgeon, Port Arthur, Tasmania)'. Miriam Weston's death notice in The Argus, 9 April 1901, describe her as 'relict of the late Dr James Weston'.

Overlanders crossing cattle over the River Murray

Overlanders crossing cattle over the River Murray

A watercolour painting entitled 'Overlanders crossing cattle over the River Murray in the Year 1839. Drawn by G. Hamilton an overlander'. The painting shows men, both on horses and foot, together with dogs and recalcitrant cattle at the bottom of one of river's cliff; another part of the mob is visible at the top of the cliff. Hamilton made sketches throughout the trip, which is described in his 'Experiences of a Colonist Forty Years Ago and a Journey from Port Phillip to South Australia in 1939 by an Old Hand'; this painting may have been done en route or after he arrived in Adelaide using his sketches.
